Amateur Championship Tourney at Pinehurst Planned Week of Golf

The Pinehurst Golf Club announces the United North and South Amateur Championship for April 4 to 9 with a Women’s Championship Open Southern Championship medal play handicap driving approaching and putting contests and social events. Entries close April 5 for the Amateur handicap and April 7 for the open Southern event while the Women’s Championship entries close April 2 with post entries until 9 a.m. April 4. The USGA rules apply except where local rulings differ. The event is pitched as a national winter season highlight.

Walter J Travis Returns to Pinehurst as Amateur Champion

Prominent entries include Walter J Travis, the amateur champion and winner of this year’s inauguration tournament. He enjoys his first Pinehurst visit, aiming to defend the championship cup and recall prior friendships. Though dominant, he is not universally regarded as invincible in this country’s golfing world at thirty six holes.

Travis Plans Amateur Championship Sail to England

Mr Travis intends to sail for England soon after his visit to compete in the Amateur Championship of Great Britain at Sandwich during the week of May 30. He may also enter the open championship on the same links on June 8. The prospect of defeating him offers national fame to many players, as he may have his last important U.S. appearance for some time. Edwin A Freeman and W C Fownes Jr. were close to the title in the inauguration tourney, with the Fownes family of Pittsburg fielding entries including WJ Fownes Jr. Continued to Last Page.

Close Scores Special Feature of Weekly Tournament

The weekly Target-Pistol Club event showcased tight finishes. Miss Marguerite Waterhouse won the women’s cup with a net 415 and 48.0 gross per string, while Mrs. John D. Schoonmaker was runner-up at 341. Herbert L. Jillson captured the men’s cup with 411 net and 52.2 gross, followed by Dr. Herbert J. Hall at 362. Nichols defeated Edwin A. Freeman in a Tuesday match, two up with two strokes in medal play.
