The advance guard of participants for next week’s United North and South Amateur Championship arrives tonight. From now until the tournament opens, trains will bring large numbers of golfers, with all roads leading to Pinehurst.
The Pinehurst Golf Club Executive Committee reports a flood of inquiries from across the nation and a strong early entry list for what officials call the most notable event in local golf history. Complete arrangements, favorable weather, and extensive course work by many workmen promise a successful tournament with good sod and lush fairways due to last year’s grass planting.
The article outlines a week of social events and sports for visitors including card parties at The Holly Inn The Berkshire and The Harvard dances at The Carolina and The Holly plus afternoon teas at the Golf Club House and open grounds of the Gun and Trophy Pistol Club with trap and target pistol tournaments. Entries for the Amateur Championship close April 5 with detailed Monday April 4 schedule beginning 10 00 A M with a women's championship qualifying round.
The 1908 Open Southern Championship runs Friday April 8 with entries required from entrants stating club handicap or scratch. Women’s Championship entries close April 2 with post entries accepted until 9:30 A M April 4. USGA rules govern all play with semi final and final rounds noted for April 5 and driving, approaching and putting contests for both genders.
The Tin Whistles concluded their tournament season with an eighteen hole medal play handicap. A special prize was an autograph copy of The Boss by Alfred Henry Lewis for the club name selection. First prize went to F. J. Bailey with seventy four net. second to H. W. Priest with seventy five net. third to H. Gordon with seventy seven net.
