The United North and South Open Championship Tournament at Pinehurst runs March 28 to 31 with men and women events and eight Sterling silver trophies. A large southern contingent is expected as the program, including two qualification rounds and match play, was finalized by the Tournament Committee and will be broadcast on request.
An eighteen hole open medal play handicap event for men called the Berkshire cup and a Leonard Tufts Cup contest for women drew sixty participants. Dr T J King of Boston qualifies for the Men s Open Championship event.
On Tuesday March 31 semifinal rounds of the Men's Open Championship and Consolation and the Women's Open Championship will be played over eighteen holes in match play. At 2:15 P.M. final rounds for the Men's Open Championship and Consolation and the Women's Open Championship will also be eighteen holes in match play.
Special Events including Monday morning driving and afternoon contests and Tuesday morning putting. A handicap of twenty five led to the men's win with a net 73. Myra D. Paterson of New York City won the women's gross score cup with 98, a season record. C P Fay of Chicopee Falls won the net score cup with 83. Cards show varied scores, with several ties and margins among both men and women.
A list of attendees includes Frank Presbrey and Chas Preshrey from New York, J B Sill of Philadelphia, M Parshall, J W Wilcox, and many others from Boston, Worcester, Chicago, Montreal, and Weymouth, with accompanying spouses and representatives from ports and towns in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and beyond.
On Monday March 30 the schedule lists nine thirty a m first round match play and ten thirty a m women’s qualification round for eighteen holes. The event awards the four best gross scores in the Women’s Open Championship with a maximum handicap of eighteen strokes across eighteen holes.
