The verse depicts Boreas, the north wind, preparing to depart with snow and hail as March challenges him. It foresees a fierce clash between winter and the approaching spring, while communities pray for peace and Easter to spare them from destruction. The piece closes with Anna Hubbard Mercur.
The annual colored baby show and cake walk at Village Hall attracted a large evening crowd last Thursday. A decorated prize table, four major cakes by Paul Rechter of Lolly Inn, and fifteen well-dressed youngsters drew admiring attendees. Dr Walter H Parcels presided as judges awarded nine prizes by audience vote, with ballot counting by Harry Stowe F Blick and Prev Sharp.
The event featured a baby contest with Bertha Violet Parcels Goins winning first prize and Robert Lee Phillips Richardson second. Cake walk winners included Howard Scott, Gertie Goins, Ernest Gaddy, and Lorna McNeill, followed by adult cake walk prizes. A varied program with songs, dances, stump speeches, and a banjo accompaniment capped the evening, praised as the season’s most successful community entertainment.
Last Friday evening a progressive euchre party was held in the music room of Holly Inn with about sixty guests. Play ran from 8 to 10, refreshments followed, and social time concluded the evening. Prizes went to Mrs. Cook, Mrs. Mitchell, and Miss Parker for the ladies. Mr. Barker, Mr. Rollins, and Mr. Bauman for the gentlemen. Mr. Curtis won the lone hand prize after three solo plays. The hostelry hopes for more such occasions in the future.
Last Monday evening the Casino parlor hosted a progressive whist party for guests. Mrs. F. H. McAlpine and Mrs. F. H. Carpenter led the entertainment as winners were announced with the 1st ladies’ prize described as a souvenir tooth.
