A tasteful Pinehurst building provides resident comfort with a Ladies Parlor and Cafe on the lower floor. The second floor features a Reading Room with daily papers and popular periodicals, a Billiard Room, Smoking Room, Bath Rooms and a Barber Shop.
A historic 1876 cattle stampede near McGregor Texas involved about 15 000 cattle and 25 cowboys with 4 700 killed. Rev J B Cranfill narrates how a thunderstorm night gave way to a massive stampede led by two steers, with the Wilson brothers and a Mexican cowboy using revolvers to steer the herd in a circle before disaster.
A cattle stampede ends with a dramatic defense using a human formed breastwork of carcasses. Wilson and lieutenants avert total loss by steering the herd into a defensive semicircle and rebuilding the line, leaving 2700 cattle missing and carcasses lining the gully, which becomes known as Stampede Gully. Pork was the most esteemed flesh at a Roman table.
