London dispatch reports six weeks of fighting producing 60 000 to 70 000 casualties, mostly German, as French and British forces press German lines from Verdun to Alsace. Updates note Russian advance toward Berlin, Austrian losses, and Allied gains across the Marne, with Maubeuge fall and continued pressure along a 150 mile front.
A German Embassy release publicizes how the Kaiser's troops occupied Rheims, a fortress town in the second French line of defense, according to a Berlin report.
Woodmen Camp No. 439 will unveil a monument to the late Sov. Hubert Smith at Zion church cemetery on Saturday September 19 at 3 o clock p m. All neighboring camps are invited to attend and assist in the ceremony. Smith, C C Ys Clerk.

H Billingsly of near Norris spent Tuesday in Pickens for undisclosed local business and errands in the town.
The Richland County Farmers Union met with near full attendance including visiting members. T W Scruggs and E J Watson spoke on the cotton situation. Col Watson described credit arrangements to help farmers store and obtain advances. A three member committee will visit banks to gauge loan support and aid in the crisis.
The cotton leaf worm Alabama agrillacea has appeared from Batesburg to Rock Hill. E A McGregor of the U S Bureau of Entomology notes alarming infestation as foliage is stripped and bolls remaining immature will likely fail to open. Pickens oil mill reports 37 bales ginned with only two sold.
Charleston dispatch reports creditors filed involuntary proceedings against the Maplecroft cotton mills in Liberty Pickens County. Pickens mill runs full time with a full staff as families notified to vacate relocate. Advertisements in Ayers Greenville promise large popular millinery business.
The county executive committee met at the court house Thursday and declared J. P. Carey Jr to the house of representatives T. H. Stewart treasurer and N. A. Christopher auditor. The auditor race was the closest in county history with the winner by only two votes.
Misses Josie Chastain and Margaret Booker arrive in Pickens to launch a new millinery store the French Hat Shop. They invite Pickens County ladies to attend the opening on September 24 25 to see the latest styles in millinery.
Richard I. Manning of Sumter defeats John G. Richards of Liberty Hill by a majority exceeding twenty eight thousand in the second primary for the South Carolina governorship.
The tabulation shows Mr. Manning carried 42 of 44 counties including Kershaw and most up-country counties. Richards failed to crack Cherokee and York, with margins of 200 and 38 respectively. Bethea and Shealy also posted strong showings as Manning’s backing grew.
Anderson J A McNeeley of the Pendleton cotton mill village petitioned the county commissioners to admit him his wife and five children to the county home hospital claiming pellagra in every member of the family. The board granted the request.
Despite a war scare Florence tobacco sales rise with daily breaks and strong prices. General floor averages reach 15 12 cents, with farmers claiming local prices at least twice and in one case three times those on other markets as tickets are turned on piles.
