Congress adjourned its second session after nineteen months in continuous session since Woodrow Wilson's inauguration. Prolonged efforts to pass cotton relief legislation collapsed, with leaders agreeing to adjourn only if pending cotton measures receive right of way when Congress reconvenes December 7.
A Cedar Rock social round up notes visitors and guests including Jack, Miss Vivian Hendrix and Miss Viola Porter, plus multiple families from Anderson Taylors and Greenville. Cedar Rock church re elected Rev. R S Saunders as pastor for the year and ج circu s is set to exhibit in Easley on the 31st.
The section reports heavy rain on Thursday October 15. Otis McJunkin’s wagon was damaged by a runaway mule in Easley while he was away, but he was uninjured. A bridge washed away during the freshet on J P Anders’ property blocked travel briefly, then rebuilt.
Mrs W D Freeman visited her sister in Anderson recently. Miss Nannie Mae Jones went to Chick Springs on the third Sunday afternoon. Miss Maggie Bates and brother Clive visited Misses Sadie and Clovie Looper recently. Mr and Mrs J B Fendley visited Mr and Mrs Jesse Hendricks Sunday afternoon. Several Cross Roads people attended singings at Mt Tabor and Griffin Sunday. Mr and Mrs W N Jones of Easley were guests of the latters parents Mr and Mrs B F Farmer. Mrs B H Whitmire is reported to be sick. friends wish her speedy recovery. Jimmy.
Mrs Sam Ferguson visits Greenville this week as Miss Della Bowen spends Sunday with Miss Mollie Pilgrim. Mr and Mrs Payne Pilgrim host family gathering. Ed Nations on Route 3 improves from fever. Mr and Mrs Charlie Smith visit mother in Cateechee. Jerry Nations hosts a cotton picking gathering last Thursday. Blumer and Wi Rose attend Saturday events.
Pickens Route 4 reports Mr. Arthur Simmons visiting Mr. Fraser Edens and Mr. Buren Clark and family last Sunday. Mr. Grover Hendricks and wife from Cedar Rock visited Mr. J. A. Holder over the weekend. Health remains good though residents complain about high cotton prices. SWEET VIOLETS.
Pickens Route 5 figures John Skelton and Marshall Martin of Six Mile discussed here days ago. Harvie Murphree, absent years, has returned home. An infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Redmond Green died last week and rests. Henry Parrott and family, including D A Parrott and W M Parrott with Gertrude and Maud, report a pleasant visit to relatives in Oconee and Anderson counties.
Miss Helen Boggs married Mr J W Tribble of Anderson South Carolina last Thursday afternoon at the home of J M Bruce the bride’s uncle. Rev Witherspoon Dodge of Anderson performed the ceremony. The bride is the daughter of the late Julius E Boggs. Tribble is a young businessman of Anderson. Only close relatives and friends attended due to the bride’s father’s recent death.
Gov. Blease grants Floyd McCullum a reprieve from October 30 to February 6. McCullum was convicted in Pickens county in September for criminal assault and sentenced to death.
T S Stribling arrived in Pickens last Friday to begin duties as a salesman with Heath-Bruce-Morrow Co. He hails from Seneca where he operated a hardware business.
S. E. Merrill, who has been visiting homefolks in this county for some time, left Tuesday for Asheville, North Carolina, where he will spend a few days before returning to his home in Penn, Mississippi.
The season opens at the school auditorium on November 17 with the first lyceum event in Pickens this year. Five numbers will appear this season and may be purchased as a season ticket for reduced prices.
Mr. B S Ellison of Pickens paid the year's taxes first, marking three consecutive years as the early taxpayer. He is described as a hardworking conscientious citizen who attends to his own business.
The Pickens train makes an additional trip to serve attendees of Sparks show. It departs Pickens at 7 30 PM and will return from Easley at 11 PM.
Word reaches this office of the serious illness of our good friend and citizen L. R. Dalton of Mile Creek. We express the desire and believe many will join us in hoping he will soon recover and be well again.

Experts note control of the Belgian coast could enable a German assault, while British defenses including searchlights and Zeppelins readiness are emphasized amid mixed battlefield reports from East Prussia Galicia and Russian Poland.
A Teneriffe dispatch says the German cruiser Karlsruhe sunk thirteen British merchant ships in the Atlantic. The Crefeld arrived with the crews of Strathroy Maplebranch Highland Hope Indiani Rio Iguasua Farn Niceto Maria de Larrinaga Cervantes Cornish City Prath Conder Lynnowan, all reported as victims of Karlsruhe. The Crefeld was joined by Patagonia Rio Negro and Asuncion.
Copenhagen notes two Kiel yards, Germania and Howard, building thirty armored fighters each carrying 500 men and moving nine miles per hour to reach the Scheldt if German troops land on England’s coast. Three fighters are said to be complete and en route. A Zeppelin airship shed is being built in Schleswig for two Zeppelins.
The admiralty outlined steps to hunt eight or nine German cruisers at large in the Atlantic Pacific and Indian oceans. The Emden and Karlsruhe are named as active threats sinking or capturing many British vessels. Seventy Allied warships are involved in the search.

Across the western front fighting shifts with gains and losses near Armentieres Labasse and Bethune while Altkirch in Alsace changes hands. In Portugal uprisings occur and Belgian forces fight along the frontier with French and British units repelling German assaults. Russian reports claim continued offensives and German retreats along the Vistula and San fronts with Austrians checked near Przemsyl.
British cruisers seized American Standard Oil steamers to block fuel for German war effort. Officials disclosed after a State Department request to release the tanker John D. Rockefeller. Standard Oil sought release of two additional ships.
After weeks of diplomacy with Ambassador Page mediating among Belgium England and Germany a relief plan was agreed. A commission of Americans in London and Brussels led by Herbert C Hoover will feed 700000 Belgians still in their country as starvation looms.

Allied forces fight to slow the German advance near Nieuport and Lille while French troops attack to halt the push. Headquarters bulletins say attacks have been repulsed with heavy losses and the Allies establish a stand behind the Yser to check the coastward drive.
The navy department reports Japan has occupied islands in the Marianne or Ladrone, Marshall, East Caroline and West Caroline archipelagoes for military use. Earlier notes spoke of Marshall and Caroline island occupations. Marianne islands lie east of Luzon about 1,700 miles from Manila.
Miss Janet Bolt daughter of Mr and Mrs J L Bolt of Easley traveled to Columbia for an operation on her throat. She had recently left Anderson College due to throat trouble.
Washington announces all twelve Federal reserve banks will open November 16 under the new act. Secretary McAdoo cites emergency southern conditions and hopes the move will aid cotton markets and general business. the reform will release about 490 billion in bank reserves and expand lending power.
In Mineola New York the Carman case ended without a verdict after 13 hours 20 minutes of deliberation. Florence Conklin Carman faced murder charges in the death of Louise Bailey with ten jurors favoring acquittal and two for first degree murder. The jury was discharged at 10 55 am amid concerns of a possible retrial while Carman’s attorneys seek bail. The defendant collapsed in court after the discharge and has been crying since being returned to her cell.
El Paso reports General Maclovia Herrera of the Carranza faction violated the peace armistice by attacking Parral Chihuahua after a five hour battle at Aguas Calientes. Carranza forces faced 2,000 Villista defenders and about 300 were killed on both sides. Herrera reportedly led 1,200 troops.
In Washington a small group of Southern representatives stays in the capital to press cotton relief when Congress reconvenes in December. A special house committee on cotton legislation will meet to review the situation. Republican Leader Mann is named but will not serve until after the election.
The family of Mr. J. L. O. Thompson moves back to Pickens after a year in Greenville. Thompson, formerly editor of The Sentinel, will not join them yet due to duties. Friends here welcome them back to the old home.

Five new members were added to Antioch Baptist Church by experience after a Wednesday night service led by Rev. W. M. Walker with assistance from Revs. H. F. Wright and B. M. Smith. Rev. Murphree was ill. Baptism is set for Sunday at 10:40 with Murphree preaching at 11:30. A. T. Winchester, Church Clerk.
Interest grows in Clemson College cooperative creamery run with the USDA. Routes from Liberty and Westminster serve farmers in Oconee Pickens Anderson Spartanburg and Greenville counties as inquiries rise about the project a major boost to dairy farming in upper South Carolina.
A joint resolution to amend the South Carolina constitution would empower Sumter Darlington and the towns of Belton and Walhalla to assess abutting property for permanent improvements on streets and sidewalks. The measure requires two thirds legislative approval and voter approval at the next general election.
Judge Shipp continues after the October term to preside in Greenville for a three week session of the court of general sessions. He has already spent five weeks on the bench in the city, hearing heavy cases in the court of common pleas.
A 35 million dollar bond plan to retire cotton in South Carolina passed the senate 25 to 4 and goes to the house. Proceeds may be used for direct purchase at 10 cents per pound or loans at 9 cents per pound. A Senate-House committee met Washington officials including President Wilson and the Federal Reserve Board to seek collateral acceptance guidance.
The Progress notes the law firm of Smith and DuBose opening a new office in a building adjoining Loan and Trust Table Rock Street. Lloyd H and Allison P Dubose, both well known in Easley, join with the family legacy of C L Hollingsworth and Mr. DuBose to form two offices in Pickens and Easley.
