Last Saturday the grim angel of death took Joel Whitmire from the home of Mr. B H Whitmire. He was seventeen and beloved by all who knew him. A member of Cross Roads Baptist church, he had been ill for weeks. The funeral was at Cedar Rock church with Rev B E Grandy officiating and the mother absent due to illness. The Sentinel offers sympathy to the Whitmire family in their bereavement.
Mrs. Julia C. Gassaway died October 14 after years of illness. Born March 1834, she was a lifelong member of Mt. Zion Methodist church in Central. Her faith and patience were noted by her pastor and family. Community extends sympathy to the relatives.

The Census bureau reports 11,624,708 bales ginned prior to November 14 this year, up from 10,444,529 last year, an increase of 1,180,179 bales. Cotton growth rose in every state, with South Carolina at 1,091,289 bales vs 995,398 last year, a 95,891 gain. Pickens ginnery records 1,940 bales by November 21, up from 1,530 last year, an increase of 410.
Six Mile News reports Miss Brown from the faculty visiting Asheville North Carolina. Dormitory students D Vickery Willie Murphree and Irene Balding visited home Friday. Miss Pearl Murphree leaves for her sick father J L Murphree. The academy lists two literary societies led by J D Vickery Pearl Murphree and Jack Stansell Earle Alewine. An outing to Table Rock was enjoyed by many including Prof Garner Mitchell Miss Jones and others. The group thanked Mr Bruce at the hotel for hospitality as rain ended and they returned Sunday to start the new week.
Reports detail heavy fighting along the Russian Poland front between the Vistula and Warthe Rivers with Berlin and Petrograd noting ongoing clashes. Austria claims 15 000 prisoners in Lower Poland and battles near Donaries, Cracow, and Przemysl while Galicia sees resumed offensives and Nieuw Sandez evacuation. Wider actions include Turkish forces damaging the Tuapse, and British efforts against German positions in the North Sea and at Friedrichshafen.

Eemina Roberts thanks Woodmen of Six Mile Camp No 607 for timely aid after her husband’s death in September though he was not a member. The camp assisted with their resources.
Revenue Officers B. B. LaBoon Sweet Alexander W F Christopher and C L Cureton raided five moonshine stills over three weeks capturing seven men and assorted booze. Stills found near Uolenoy Eustatoe and at Table Rock mountain with one raid at midnight. Officers heard moonshiners discuss escape before arrest and destroyed the stills.
A six month old, Joe Jackson, son of Mr and Mrs George Smith, fell into the fire while the mother left the room to fetch wood. He died Sunday night after suffering since Saturday morning. Funeral by Rev E V Babb, burial at Enon. Friends extend sympathy.
John Massingale alias Marion Wilson, an escaped convict, was tracked by Sheriff Roark in Monroe county Tennessee and brought back to Pickens county after fourteen years at liberty. Convicted in 1900 for manslaughter, he fled after six months on the chain gang and lived quietly in the East Tennessee mountains with a 130 acre farm, a wife, and eleven children. He confessed and agreed to resume his sentence, joining the county chain gang.
