EK P. McCravey, chairman of the local exemption board, warned slackers at the courthouse Friday that patriotic support is required for the draft. He charged unscrupulous politicians with misguiding the public, denounced the act, and declared anyone calling the board partial a liar and a slacker.
Miss Christine Clayton arrived from Lawrenceville to teach this year. W. Clayton of Camp Sevier visited homefolks. Wesleyan College commencement featured an efficiency conference of Southern ministers. Rev W L Thompson preached the baccalaureate and gave the class address. Dr Harper of Low College spoke to the Library Association. Ralph Ramseur visited Atlanta on business. Central Red Cross surpassed its fund drive, reporting roughly 3000 to 3500 dollars raised. Issaqueena Mill contributed several hundred dollars on the give a day plan.

A June 3 gathering assembles at Lewis street at 11 00 A M with a march to the courthouse. The program includes prayers by Rev John C Bailey an address by Dr Juhian and a Crosses of Honor presentation followed by a 1 00 P M picnic dinner for veterans on courthouse grounds.
The Sentinel reports a small stock of Millers Certificates available at 46 cents per hundred, offered by the office.
Democratic voters in Pickens County may enroll June 3 at listed clubs. Applicants must be 21, white Democratic citizens resident two years in state and six months in county, with teachers and ministers exempt. Enrollment officers and locations listed. books close July 30.
J S Leopard announces candidacy for the house of representatives in Pickens County where he previously ran two years ago and drew a strong vote. Judge J B Newbery seeks re election as probate judge after thirty two years in office. Anand in this paper paves his returns.
President T M Norris of Norris Cotton Mills lauds Cateechee residents for a total Red Cross contribution of 588.25 dollars. He notes every person over sixteen participated and paid in cash, a record within the county. The Sentinel praises the village’s loyalty and refuses to publish every contributor’s name due to scale.
A May 26 1918 letter from Camp Jackson South Carolina describes Pickens County men arriving, eager to join the fight to defeat Germany, with notes on army growth, shortages of troops, and calls to support the war effort from home and in the ranks. It lists the Pickens county group as 11th Company Depot Brigade soldiers
Miss Ruth Hendricks became the bride of Pres ton Paul Farmer in a simple home wedding on May 21 at 6 p.m. Rev Sam Jones presided. The couple, both members of military families, were married in Greenville with close relatives present. The bride wore a tailored suit with georgette blouse and a bride roses bouquet. the groom wore Army uniform. Mrs Farmer is the only daughter of S D Hendricks. Mr Farmer is the only son of his parents. The couple plan happiness together for their future.
A patriotic gathering at the courthouse honored sixty six young men headed to Camp Jackson. Speakers included Sam B. Craig E. P. Mc Cravey and Captain Watson. Rev. I. T. Hodges gave a closing prayer and a Red Cross supper followed. At the depot the group sent the soldiers off with comfort bags as they departed escorted by Captain Watson and W. L. Green.
Liberty voters approved issuing 30 000 in bonds for a water works system by 34 to 11 as progress continues there. W S Parsons J S Banister and Mr Holland were elected commissioners of public works for Liberty in a related election.
Montvale community reports healthy living with farmers thinning cotton and hoeing corn. Montvale Sunday school remains active under superintendent W R Gravley as Rev B C Atkinson preached at Mountain Grove last weekend. Local youths join military service with best wishes. Rev Bill Holcomb to preach at Montvale next Sunday at 2 30 PM. Prayer services at Holly Springs Thursday at 11 30. Miss Emma Cantrell and Bertha visited Mrs A Cannon. Privates Robert Welborn and William Lusk of Remount Depot cavalry visited home. A singing at Mr and Mrs M D Chappell’s home Sunday night. Blue Evans.
