Twelve senators refuse to grant President authority to arm ships as Congress ends its session. Wilson takes oath of office and urges votes for women. Health board updates tax assessors work and new secretary begins. Farmers urged to plant food crops in short state items from Pickens County.
The Pickens Sentinel offers an annual subscription of $1.50, less than 8 cents a week, touted as unmatched value. The paper claims most county citizens read it and urges others to subscribe or persuade neighbors to do so.
Last week in Pickens county general sessions many defendants pled guilty and were sentenced. Notable cases include Will Hill jailed 18 months for assault and carrying weapons, W Lesley Manley given suspended sentence after three months or $650 fine, and Paul Davis ordered to pay fines with a ten day option before suspension. Additional defendants John Harrison Wilton Louis Davis John Gary James Hardyman Cal Hallums and Ralph Baker received various terms from 4 months to 5 years with conditions and suspensions where noted.
This report covers the opening of a court session with Clerk O S Stewart new to the role assisted by C R D Burns and Major Stewart. John W Langston served as court crier, succeeding Phil Porter. Judge Smith praised Pickens as a county of good people. Will Shell, accused of abduction, was married in open court to Sophia Nesbit, both described as colored. No major civil cases were heard.
Henry A Townes was commissioned county auditor after being chosen by the people last year. Christopher turned the office over to Townes on Tuesday March 6. Townes, a native of the county, is expected to maintain the office in a high state of efficiency and is noted for his popularity and support. Christopher retires after fourteen years as county auditor dating from 1894 with a stint starting again in 1906. He has not decided his future business but has several propositions under consideration. Townes recently bought a home near the Pickens graded school building and moved in weeks ago.
Tax books in Pickens County will close March 15 and March 16 respectively. Taxes unpaid by the deadlines will be turned over to the sheriff for collection. Rumors circulate about organizing a local military company in Pickens.
The Pickens delegation inserted in the general supply bill a list of county appropriations. It details eleven mills for county purposes with funds for roads and bridges, salaries for county officials, education boards, jail, jurors, county home, post mortems, public buildings, printing, miscellaneous contingencies, rural police, and interest on indebtedness. The grand total is 53,501.66 with estimated revenues reducing it to 47,501.66.
Treasurer-elect Olaf T. Hinton purchased seven acres of led and a handsome residence in Pickens known for its proximity to the school and business sections. The Cedar Rock street frontage runs about 600 feet with Blue Ridge views. The consideration was about $4,000 and Hinton will move to the county seat to assume treasurer duties July 1.
Fred H. Dominick reports contributions reaching the $1,000 fund target to cover the deficit in the treasury of the National Democratic committee. The campaign seeks ongoing donations to stabilize party finances.
Rain delays farmers along Liberty Route 3 as plowing lags. Updates include F M Rogers family recovering from grip and P P Nelson faces measles. Mrs Harper Haynes sick at home with children at bedside. B F Rogers, noted as a rock-thrower, killed a blue tailhawk with a single stone. Hurrah for you.

The small grain crop has revived as continuous rains keep farmers behind on fieldwork. Martin school hosted a successful box supper Thursday with proceeds aiding the school. Died last Friday night March 25 near Mt. Bethel church was Melvin Spearman age about 31. Funeral held Saturday led by Rev. S. M. Jones. Miss Cordelia Clark of Greenville visiting Mrs. Melinee Spearman. Elizabeth Mauldin visited Martin school. A newborn daughter arrived March 1 to Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Jones.
James L Carbery a special government agent formerly of Washington D C now in Rock Hill S C visited our village last week to boost gardening in mill communities. On February 20 a large crowd heard his lecture covering vegetables and home beautification with flowers vines and trees aided by stereopticon views of successful mill town projects. He inspired actionable ideas and urged higher efforts.
Municipal election for Mayor and six Councilmen to serve two years in Pickens will be held Monday April 2 1917 at City Hall. Voters within city limits who are qualified for general elections may vote. Managers John Thornley Irvin Miller B I Parsons W O Maulon Clerk.
