Augustus Octavius Bacon longtime U S senator from Georgia and chair of the foreign relations committee died Saturday in a Washington hospital after a ten day illness. He aged 74 and was the first U S senator elected by direct vote under the seventeenth amendment. The immediate cause of death was a blood clot in the heart.
