The Sentinel invites readers to participate in Opportunity Time from February 12 to February 28. Subscriptions, including arrears, qualify for large vote bonuses up to 27 000 votes. Participants urged to recruit friends, explain benefits, and secure long subscriptions to boost their chances for the prized player piano and other rewards.
A list of contestants with vote tallies up to Saturday night February shows Nelle Robinson leading at 235 250 and Robert Welborn at 225 300. Other notable totals include Kate Black 220 000 Essie Clayton 190 000 Mabel Henderson 210 000 and Raymond Cox 211 150. The roll includes numerous names such as Lillian Ramsay James Murphree Nannie Porter Noreen Smith Ora Miller and Pearl Findley among others with varied counts.
Easley residents greet a China missionary Dr Junkin who spoke at the Presbyterian church both services. B F Mulligan returns from Louisiana to Easley and buys a home near the Baptist church. Several Greenville visitors and locals are listed with weekend and family visits. A Confederate veteran Mr George Owens dies at 72 with funeral at Fairview Methodist.
Our teacher Miss Bessie Jones will host a Valentine party next Friday evening February 13 at 7 o'clock at the Lenhardt school house. Refreshments will be sold to fund books for the school library. The Cross Roads string band will furnish music and everyone is invited to attend for a pleasant evening.
The Pickens Township Inter-denominational singing convention meets at Second Baptist Church on Sunday February 15 1914 at 2 p m. Devotional by Capt. Taylor 15 minutes. One and a half hour service by leaders. Quartet singing by selected singers. Two five minute talks on music in churches. Class singing for thirty minutes. Invites extend to nearby townships and leaders. executive committee members should attend.
Next Wednesday night the Four Bostonians will appear at the Pickens school auditorium. The act is billed as a top lyceum number on the road and a large audience is expected. It has cost much to bring the company here, and preparations are in place for a record crowd.
Edd Goldman, a Black painter, was arrested Saturday night on petty larceny and concealed weapons charges. After pleading guilty before Magistrate Porter, he will serve five months on the county chain gang. He painted at Pickens Inn under Capt. Ragsdale, after taking a pistol from R. E Bruce’s room. a prior express office break led to reform school time.
An early health notice promotes Chamberlain's Tablets as a remedy for stomach weakness. It uses a metaphor comparing the stomach to a boiler and the body to an engine, claiming the tablets strengthen and invigorate digestion and improve natural function. Sold widely by dealers.
Governor Blease vetoed a bill permitting Columbia to buy land for a public park, arguing it enriches the Columbia Electric Railway and hurts the poor. The House split 52 to 52 on selling the State Hospital for the Insane to State Park, delaying action. Senate debates cover legal ads rates, railroad station rules, and city ward changes.
South Carolina Live Stock Association members heard calls for increased farm feed as the path to lower milk costs. Experts from the U S Department of Agriculture plan to speak in Columbia. James L. McIntosh urged higher feed to improve cattle. In Cherokee County, R A Parker reported gold finds, showing a 33 pennyweight nugget and a 52 pennyweight nugget, with potential earnings if his prospecting continues.
News from Pleasant Grove reports rain signs and community progress. Nessent Bishop has married Florence Masters and moved to A. T. Fortner’s farm. James Barnes works on J. P. Andre’s dwelling. Clyde Fortner visits. A Grove rally offered farming advice and urged cooperation to boost Pickens county farming. Farm yields cited include 1100 pounds seed cotton per quarter acre and 100 bushels of oats per acre. A social gathering at Rigdon home featured quiddle cracked cotton and games.
Maddison Earle Smith died at his home near Pickens Chapel Friday night at 61. A lifelong farmer and devout Methodist, he leaves three sons Clark Hovey and Coke. Funeral at his church with Rev. D. D. Jones and Rev. D. W. Hiatt officiating. a note on kindness was found in his pocket.
Mrs Elizabeth Gantt died February 6 at age 66 at her niece Mrs Earle Gilstrap's home after a short illness. She was buried February 7 at Tabor church where she was a member. Funeral services were led by Rev L E Wiggins. She left a daughter and two sisters.
The agricultural extension bill clears the senate without roll call. It distributes funds between white and colored agricultural schools only by state discretion, rejects the Jones amendment, and adopts Shafroth’s governor and secretary-led plan. An initial 4900000 donation covers each state and Hawaii. Funding scales to 4.8 million yearly after eight years, based on rural population. Congressman Lever of South Carolina introduced the measure.
Mrs. Maddox wife of George W Maddox died suddenly at home near Norris February 5 at age sixty six. She leaves husband three sons Henry and William of Norris John of Georgia and two brothers John Liberty and Robert Mt Pisgah. Funeral by Rev D W Hiatt at Mt Zion Methodist church Central. She joined Friendship Baptist Church in Anderson county in youth and lived a devout Christian life. Neighbor vouched for thirty five years of good conduct.
Mrs Em McKinney of Eastatoe and Mrs J Tom McKinney of Easley were guests of Mr Joel H Miller and family. Rev Singlefoot preached an excellent sermon at Cedar Rock church, and Mr Thomas N Hayes returned from visits to Seneca and Calhoun.
R L Boggs reports a new church at High Falls was blown from its foundations during a gale last Friday. The unfinished building had weather boarding in place but the rafters and framing are badly damaged, requiring complete teardown and rebuilding.

Mr Rex Hendricks awoke to find his wife dead beside him in the Easley cotton mill village on February 2. A four week old infant cried, waking the father. Coroner from Pickens ruled natural causes after Dr H E Russell’s statement. no inquest. The widow, about 32, leaves husband and several children.
Columbia reports C. P. Wyatt apprentice from Easley may hold the 1914 Navy rifle shot title if his fleet match record at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, stands through June 25. Utah won the fleet match. S E Russell and Cox Ausburn key top scorers. Russell from Richmond. Ausburn from Atlanta.
T D Harris surprised by wife and children at the Hiawatha Hotel for a noon birthday dinner. A festively decorated table with a pyramid of fifty seven candles honored his 57 years. Guests included Rev L E Wiggins Mrs L E Wiggins Elinor Knight and family members. Willgem H Harris was absent away at Bradstreet’s Agency in Atlanta.
