Charles Atkinson representing Six Mile Academy won first place in the Pickens county high school oratorical contest held at Liberty high school. John Bailey Liberty and Milton Bunker Easley took second and third. First prize included a gold medal. The annual event drew large, enthusiastic crowds with spirited rivalries and college style yells. Judges praised the speakers. next week the girls’ expression contest and a track meet at Clemson College are planned with large crowds expected.

Fire at Porters Barber Shop Ends with Minor Burns
A Saturday night blaze at Porters Barber Shop started when Fred the shine boy grabbed a gasoline bottle instead of kerosene. The flames singed his hair and eyebrows while Bert Porter knocked the burning bottle into the street. Ernest Childress and Dr. R E Lewis moved his Ford away from the spill, and Squire Porter offered steady moral support as Fred received medical care.

Death at Six Mile: Mrs Ellen Garrett
Mrs Ellen Garrett dies after pneumonia and heart dropsy at age seventy five. Special visitor Mr Physical Death visited her home March 26. She leaves six children and a granddaughter Ellen Garrett raised from infancy. Funeral at Mt Olive conducted by Dr L G Clayton followed by burial beside husband Aaron Garrett.

William Abraham Watkins dies after a prolonged illness in Liberty at age 61. He was born in Anderson county and moved to Liberty eleven years ago. Funeral service conducted at First Baptist Church by Dr. T. M. Galphin and Rev. J. C. Bailey, burial in Westview cemetery. He is survived by his widow Lula Gary, five children, his mother Mrs. Hester Watkins, a sister in Texas, and two half brothers in Oklahoma and Belton.

The Liberty basketball team edged Pickens 21 to 20 with Miss Pauline Brown as referee. Track events were not completed. Miss Williams visited home in Eastey. Miss Mary Sutherland and Edwin Hutto attended chapel. The girls expression contest is set for Friday at 7 30 with Miss Annie Grayley as representative. A special train to Basley is planned for No 40 at 6 15 Saturday if enough names are given by Friday noon.
