Obituary of R B Lumpkin Dies After Pneumonia

On March 1 neighbor and friend R B Lumpkin was stricken with pneumonia. He died on March 9 around 4 PM and was buried at Mile Creek cemetery where he supervised the Sunday school. Revs W C Seabern and Fulton Childress conducted the funeral as friends mourned his benevolence and faith.

Piedmont Inter-High Meet Sets Greenville Weekend Dates

The Piedmont Inter-High School Athletic and Oratorical Association schedules its annual meet in Greenville for Friday night and Saturday, April 3 and 4. Speakers include Jay Gaines of Liberty, Osborne Williams of Easley, Willie Austin of Seneca, Pritchars Payseur of Westminster, Raynor Lehr of Furman Fitting School, Henry Roland of Central, Dakyns Stover of Greenville, John Doe of Richland, Jerome Beck of Anderson, and judges H. K. Osborne S. M. Wolfe and Walter M. Scott. The cup for first place comes from Jefferson Powder Company, currently held by Valhalla. medals go to top finishers.

Rural graded schools grants in Pickens county

Pickens county received 1400 from the state for rural graded schools to be distributed among Zion Farrs Dacusville Gates Coleney Montvale and twelve other districts next school year. The legislature funded grants for districts that vote a four mill levy to establish rural graded schools.

Little girl asks whiskey letters to stop in Anderson

Ruth Bouchillon ten year old from Tribble Street Anderson South Carolina writes to a liquor house asking them to quit sending letters to her father. She urges the sender to stop and cites the Bible condemning drink and worldly gains. She says the letters are burned and prays the sender will change.

Medlin duo returns from Oconee County survey and visits

J E Medlin and Alonzo Edens returned from Oconee County where they surveyed a tract for Medlin. Medlin found his father sick and learned from J Mat Murphy in Oconee that Murphy’s grain crop is good and cotton yield may reach two bales per acre. Medlin reports Murphy teaching a singing class as well. He also visited brother W S Medlin in Ebenezer Oconee County, noting a thriving cabbage crop.

The April Piedmont Magazine will publish two articles by Pickens County figure Julius E. Boggs, plus a portrait. The issue also promotes Boggs’s literary work and includes a biography of Van S. Jones. In Flat Rock, March 23 the education meeting led to consolidating two rural schools into a three-teacher graded system with a new three-room school near Carmel Presbyterian church.
