South Carolina Legislature Debates Reform and Education
The South Carolina General Assembly opens with Sparker Stevenson addressing lawmakers. Governors vetoes and Supreme Court rulings shape debates on special legislation and compulsory education. Proposals include funding Winthrop College and expanding free schools, with discussions on dispensary finances and tax burdens.
Legislative debates mix education bills and liquor prompts
A chaotic record shows 19th century legislators wrestling over compulsory education, liquor regulation, and dispensation laws. Senators consider crop division, court appeals, and a Soldiers Home bill while debates touch public access to offices and upcoming expositions. Industry disputes with the Virginia Chemical Company loom as legal actions escalate.
Killing at Gaffney Ends in Inquest and Trial
A shooting at the edge of Gaffney left Anttnoy S. Gy and Pick Norman dead after a confrontation over a pistol purchase. "Son" Cobb obtained a double barreled gun after being refused at a hardware store and killed Norman with two shots, one to the abdomen and one to the breast. The inquest returned a verdict that Cobb acted in self defense or under oath, while witnesses recalled a pitched battle involving three men on each side. Also noted are unrelated items about lumbago remedies and district election counts in Mariel and Wow counties.
