A cold front sweeps east with heavy snow in the Rocky Mountains and flurries in the northern Midwest. Denver reports nearly 3 inches as Wyoming towns record snow. Temperatures fall to 32 degrees while East Coast stays warm in the 80s.
Senator Humphrey argued for at least nine billion dollars in new taxes while the Senate Finance Committee backed about five point five billion in tax hikes. President Truman and allies urge up to ten billion, warning inflation may not be checked without larger increases.
United Nations forces launched Operation Cleaver on the central front in Korea, driving three armor divisions and the war’s largest armored push. Seven Russian T-34 tanks were destroyed by UN jets, with several more damaged, as three allied divisions advanced to seize key hill positions and break a major Communist buildup near Pyongyang. Over 100 prisoners were taken and hundreds of Communist dead were reported, with mixed progress on the eastern front and occasional surrenders aborted by fire.
Autumn arrives officially at 1 38 p m Sunday but Phoenix forecast notes only modest relief from scorching temperatures. Jurwitz of the Weather Bureau says fall temperatures lag in Phoenix, with frost possible above 6000 feet northward and northern Arizona cooler tonight.
A small tropical storm in the southwest Gulf of Mexico at seven mph was expected to move inland into Mexico south of Tampico late today. The Weather Bureau estimated strongest winds at 60 mph over a small area, about 110 miles southeast of Tampico, moving northwest. Vessels were urged to exercise caution west and northwest of its center.
A stubborn blaze roared through a downtown Bowie block, starting in Barrett Furniture Company and spreading to nearby buildings. Fire crews from Bowie and four North Texas towns battled the flames from 1:30 a.m. for about three and a half hours. seven businesses were burned or damaged, with small flare ups and exploding canned food later in the morning. Bowie, population about 5,000, is 65 miles northwest of Fort Worth. Firefighters from Decatur Nocona and Henrietta aided the effort.
Douglas September 21 AP reports Phelps Dodge and union officials conduct near continuous negotiations during the 80 day cooling off period under Taft Hartley law. Meetings began Wednesday with no progress report issued by either side and no federal mediation.
A naval flier died when his Corsair fighter crashed in Mexico just below the border. Lt. (jg) George Stevens, 26, of Coronado, Calif., was identified as the deceased pilot. He is survived by his wife and a one-year-old daughter.
A speeding express from Liverpool to London derailed near Stone Hill Tunnel in Weedon England. Five coaches wrecked, eight killed including an unidentified U S Air Force corporal and 45 injured. Rescue teams searched for more casualties as the crash site was cleared. The dead include six men a boy and a woman. An American corporal and a sergeant from Albany were aboard. the sergeant gave a brief account of the moment.
The Tate news agency reports three Soviet Russian advisers and more than 30 Chinese Red militia disappeared on September 4 between Canton and Hong Kong. The notice is dated September 21 from Taipei Formosa.
Soviet deputy foreign minister Andrei Gromyko shouted thief alarm aboard the Ile de France at Plymouth England after reporting an attempt to enter his luxury suite. He described a door entry attempt and had the steward notify night watchmen who found nothing amiss. Gromyko locked his door and ordered no disturbance during the liner stop. He occupies the single large suite with room for four.
Forks Washington residents faced a month long forest fire sparked by logging railroad engines. A providential east wind shift and 85 percent evacuation saved the town of 1120, though 19 buildings burned including two sawmills and 15 homes. Forks volunteers held the line until federal crews arrived and formed a backfire to protect a new hospital.
At Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks a fire or explosion yesterday destroyed an air force B-47 on a flight apron. Secrecy surrounded details and officials said only that an investigation is underway. No injuries were reported.
Washington reports the Naval Observatory announced that summer ends Sunday at 1 38 p m Phoenix Time when the sun crosses the celestial equator marking the official seasonal change.
Tokyo Sept 21 UP search abandoned for 14 crew members of a B 29 Superfortress that crashed into the Sea of Japan after bombing North Korea. Planes and ships swept a 100 mile area near the crash site and returned with only the left wing a rubber raft a parachute and a survival kit recovered. Belgian troops in the British sector fired live ammunition during war games injuring 11 Allied soldiers and a German child. Victims’ nationalities and names were not disclosed. Three British divisions and troops from the United States France Belgium and The Netherlands participate in the maneuvers.
Manila Times reports Gov. Gregorio Santayana of Quezon Province was released by a kidnap gang after being seized Wednesday in Linguna. The gang action prompted ongoing police investigations and international news coverage.
Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway postponed accepting the Communist bid to resume truce talks in Korea. A U.N. command spokesman said a reply likely within 24 hours. Ridgway favors conditions or safeguards, possibly via liaison officers, to address Kaesong neutrality and prior U.N. violations.
Senator Benton demanded that Senator McCarthy provide any evidence to back his charge that several members of Congress have known Communists on their staffs. The request comes as the national debate over loyalty investigations intensifies and questions about evidence and sources remain unresolved.
