Eighth Army reports 94 Sikorsky Whirlibird helicopters airlifted 228 troops and 17,772 pounds of gear to a mountain front. The operation aimed to supply a reconnaissance unit and establish an aerial supply line as brutal uphill fighting continued against North Korean and Chinese forces.
A retired Far East army intelligence officer testified that in January 1950 Ambassador Jessup told him U S recognition of Communist China was imminent. He quoted Jessup as saying recognition would not approve the Red regime. The hearing, held by a Senate Internal Security subcommittee, probes subversive influences on U S Pacific policy.
Sen. Robert A. Taft of Ohio said American foreign policy in the present emergency rests on the Russian threat. He urged reexamining programs if the threat eases, and warned that defense alliances aid to free peoples, and home rearmament may be needed to avoid war with Russia. He noted no alternative given communism and Russia’s hard line.

President Truman urged the Senate to adopt a $10 billion tax hike aimed at balancing the budget. He sent a letter to Vice President Barkley criticizing loopholes and favors in the Finance Committee draft, noting current deficits and high personal and corporate incomes. In Spencer Indiana a 17 year old boy John J. Phipps Jr admitted to beating former deputy Warren B. Johnson 47 to death with a car jack. He said the motive was Johnson’s alleged influence on his parents separation. Johnson’s body was found in a barnyard yesterday morning.
Three 18 year olds William Morey Max Pell and David Royal admitted to killing Pauline Campbell a nurse near the University of Michigan campus in an early morning attack on Sept 11 They said robbery was their motive netting less than 50 cents each from her purse The fourth youth Daniel Myers linked to an earlier assault was held for investigation and arraignment was delayed due to court congestion
Ted Mullen of Prescott, longtime Arizona peace officer and pioneer family member, is named captain to head the enforcement detail for the State Department of Liquor Licenses and Control. He will earn $400 a month, appointed by John A. Duncan on Gov. Howard Pyle’s recommendation, succeeding Fred DeElliott who resigned last month. Mullen’s career spans Arizona Highway Patrol service, Maricopa County attorney’s office investigation, deputy U.S. marshal duties, Navy service, and work at U.S. Naval Air Station San Diego. He is a Tempe native and son of former state land commissioner Charles P. Mullen.

Iris Chester, 24, of 2107 E Virginia, tracked and captured two juvenile would be safe crackers, brothers aged 11 and 13, after they stole her billfold containing $30 at University Park. Police recovered the pair and returned them to juvenile authorities. The boys admitted stealing a purse at Encanto swimming pool yesterday afternoon.
