Cleveland September 6 A tragedy at the National Air Races shadows Cook Cleland's Thompson Trophy win as Bill Odom dies in a high speed F-51 Mustang crash into a Berea house. The accident halted an 80 000 strong crowd as Cleland set a new speed record in the Thompson event.
Corwin R. Mocine Phoenix planning director since January 1946 resigns effective Oct 7 to become Berkeley planning director. He cites higher salary and notes Phoenix nearly doubled in size to 17.1 square miles. He says no friction with city administration and will lead regional zoning for the San Francisco Bay area.
Arizona tally rises to 16 violent deaths since the Labor Day weekend began. The latest victim, 1st Lt. James R. Anderson, 25, an Air Force test pilot, died when his F 80 jet crashed near Williams Air Force Base Chandler. Anderson, formerly of Newark New Jersey, lived in Chandler with his wife Dorothy. He was a World War II veteran with two Battle Stars for Europe service. An investigation board was named after a 6 50 a m crash. Also reported: a woman killed in a two car crash last night bringing the toll to seven. Other deaths include four killed in two plane collisions, two drownings, one gunfire death and a scorpion sting. Names listed include Bertha Andrews Malinda Mash Jack Hart Charleen Young Morenci Chet Huntington Ruth Burridge and Joseph Louis Lopez. Henry M Yerger drowned. Turn to Death Toll on Page 2.
Philadelphia scored twice in the final third but fell to New York 6 to 4 as Roberts earned the win and Konstanty took the loss. Pitches by Lopatka and Mueller supported a mixed battering by both clubs with 11 hits registered between the teams.
A Los Angeles businessman to take over Metro Bus Lines management after a two year option to buy 60 percent. First National Bank of Arizona approves a 272,500 loan to Phoenix system, with bank to control until option exercised. Charles Koors named to manage the Phoenix firm.
A coalition favored by the Charter Government Committee announced a slate for the Phoenix City Council for the November primary. Mayor Nicholas Udall was to head the ticket with candidates including Charles N. Walters and Barry Goldwater among others. A new Metropolitan Bus Lines board was planned, and a $272,500 bank loan was said to cover all debts as talks with a San Diego operator were dropped amid financial concerns.
Eddie Sheldon 39, a former inmate of the Arizona State Hospital, is jailed in Yavapai County as deputies investigate a double shooting. He allegedly wounded his mother Dorothy Haines and neighbor Joe Ware near Wickenburg after a rock-throwing dispute over goats. Sheriff Bozarth said Sheldon had previously been a patient at the state hospital and that bloodhounds aided in the search.
Seismograph at University of California logged a light quake likely off Eureka California at 3 21 am today. Navy vessel Philippine Mars landed safely at Honolulu after one engine detached and sank 400 miles off Oahu. President Truman rushed to the White House to lead talks as Anglo American economic negotiations opened. The National Labor Relations Board sought federal injunction to restrain CIO longshoremen from interfering with Hawaii to West Coast cargo unloading in San Francisco.
Markets at a glance show quiet trading with bonds steady and cotton firm. Chicago wheat nearby contracts rise modestly while hogs stay uneven with gains up to 90 cents, and cattle trade unevenly with some declines. Nearby tattle tops at 31.00 as hedging activity persists.
A 28 year old pharmacy student Howard Unruh opened fire across Camden New Jersey killing 12 people and wounding four others in stores, homes, and the street. Police used tear gas to flush him from his apartment after a siege and he was captured without resistance. The victims included a druggist his wife and mother a shoe repair man an insurance agent a barber a young bride a 6 year old boy and a 2 year old. The spree began at a drugstore on 32nd Street and River Road and continued through the city before Unruh surrendered.
In Saginaw County Michigan on September 6 four children died in a home fire started by an oil stove explosion on the first floor. Mother Cleo Walters, 34, was hospitalized for shock and burns. A fifth child, Mary 12, was seriously injured after leaping from a second floor bedroom.
Prison guards opened fire as four inmates tried to flee a work gang near Florence at 8 30 this morning. One prisoner Roscoe Woolsey 21 was wounded in the leg and three others Richard Raymond Rob ert Holiday and Robert Ed Murray were captured. Woolsey and Murray have multiple prior burglary sentences in Mohave Coconino and Maricopa counties. Murray had a prior escape attempt and is wanted on a Cook County ill hald order.
International News Service reports statements from President Truman CIO President Philip Murray and Gen Dwight D Eisenhower. Truman praises the 81st Congress for enacting measures and promising more laws. Murray calls for wage increases to reduce unemployment and restore purchasing power. Eisenhower commends Americans for openness to debate and discussion on public policy.
Shirley May France, 17, of Somerset Mass, the youngest to attempt the English Channel, was lifted from the water by her father trainer Walter France aboard the pilot boat Providence near Dover after 10 hours 39 minutes of swimming. She refused to quit until her father asked again, was taken aboard the Black Magic schooner and ended the attempt about eight miles from Dover. Adverse tides had pushed her off course earlier but tides later favored the direct route.
