Debris Buries Victims in Dallas Housing Blast

Fourteen injured in a North Dallas Cedar Springs Housing Project explosion last night. A gas leak is suspected after residents reported smelling gas for days. Three severely hurt and eight children among the injured. Victims described wreckage and roof collapse as flames flashed through the four apartments. Police and fire officials investigated the cause. one resident, Leroy Shannon, said gas odor had been reported to maintenance.

Acheson cites Czech move as trumped up charges

Secretary of State Dean Acheson said Prague’s Communist government is backing a flimsy pretext to jail embassy staff and has requested recall of two diplomats John G. Heyn and Isaac Patch. Samuel Meryn remains imprisoned while U S vows protest but has not yet been delivered. Cripps Warns Britain Cant Live On U.S. Charity

Sir Stafford Cripps warned in the House of Commons that Britain cannot exist on U.S. charity. He outlined a £280 million economy drive, stressing production efficiency and cuts in imports and government spending as essential to fund a high standard of living. He noted the dollar sterling problem and Marshall aid, with devaluation recent on Sept. 18.

Truman Signs Bill in Major Wage Victory

President Truman signed the Fair Labor Standards Amendments of 1949 raising the federal minimum wage from 40 to 75 cents an hour and called it a major victory for the administration. The law expands protections but excludes about 1.2 million workers, with 22.6 million currently covered. The new wage floor takes effect in 90 days and is expected to raise the pay of up to 1.5 million workers.

Searchers Set Out For Wreck Near Bloody Mountain

In Bishop California a four man volunteer search party begins a dawn trek into the Sierra Nevada to reach a plane wreck on Bloody Mountain four days after the crash of a two place Army Ryan fighter. Edward Rider and Elizabeth Rider, aged 23 and 30, are missing with air search having failed to confirm survival. Floyd Bedwell, Civil Air Patrol pilot, leads the ground party aided by a helicopter relay. Rescue by air is ruled out due to the peak height.

Registration for Trustees Vote Near End

Registration for the trustees vote closes soon with Friday the last day to file. In Mari copa County voting runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday per deputy county attorney Fred C Struckmeyer Jr. Eligibility requires county registration at the Courthouse office by 5 p.m. Friday. Voters must reside in the school district 30 days and be a parent or guardian of a district minor or have paid state or county taxes in the prior year. If unchanged since the last election, re registration is not needed. In Phoenix Union High School District two candidates filed for trustees Ray Busey seeks a new five year term and Dr Norman A Ross opposes the incumbent. Bus Wreck Near Manhattan Injures Sixteen

A Continental Trailways bus hit a low culvert 29 miles north of Manhattan on U S Highway 77 injuring sixteen people. The most seriously hurt was the driver Dorsey E Church 28 of Wichita who suffered head and back injuries and shock.

An Argentine Air Force transport plane believed to carry seven persons was reported to have crashed in woods north of Tucuman. The aircraft departed Buenos Aires yesterday for Salta and disappeared overnight.
