Washington October 3 Treasury officials warned that a loophole in the Gold Reserve Act 1933 has allowed hoarding of unprocessed gold as a hedge against dollar devaluation. They estimate last year’s sales at 25000 to 35000 ounces worth 625000 to 875000, and say the practice is unprofitable while not illegal. Officials deny any devaluation plan and caution against gold purchases as a safe hedge despite market prices.
