United Press reports about labor action showing nearly 1 million workers idle as steel workers join miners led by John L. Lewis. Anticipated rise to as many as 2 million if stoppages persist, risking fuel and material shortages in factories. The 980,000 total includes 514,000 steelworkers who quit mills and furnaces.
Belgrade reports Tito charged that Russia uses aggressive pressure on Yugoslavia with troops near its borders and has violated the UN Charter. A note to the Russian chargé d’affaires said troop movements in Cominform states create war psychosis harming peace. Tito implied possible military action and called Soviet promises empty words. Poland joined the scene last night as tensions mounted.

An explosion aboard the 8,600 ton heavy cruiser Almirante Brown during fleet maneuvers off Puerto Belgrano base near Buenos Aires killed several people and injured about 40. The ship was part of the Argentine fleet conducting drills off the southern coast.
Walter Ramirez a 24 year old ex convict facing strong arm robbery charges slipped from Maricopa County jail custody using a county building elevator. He avoided gun room checks then vanished after returning to the sheriff's offices. Police sought him with a description as he fled downtown Phoenix.
Berlin reporters describe the final U S airlift flight landing at Templehof Airdrome marking the end of the great peacetime aviation operation.
