Truman asks Senate to boost taxes by 3 billion dollars
Washington June 28 AP The Truman administration urged the Senate to add about 3 billion dollars to the House approved tax hike. Treasury Secretary Snyder testified that the 7.2 billion dollar bill is insufficient to avoid red ink and inflationary pressure, noting the government already borrows to cover deficits and will likely borrow several billion more in six months. He urged a total around 10 billion dollars in extra taxes, with emphasis on individual income and excise taxes, and called for tougher capital gains taxation and closing loopholes in oil and coal sectors. The House proposal would raise personal income taxes by 12 percent to yield about 2.847 billion dollars annually and boost excises on gasoline and tobacco to add roughly 1.252 billion dollars. Snyder led off the Senate hearings on higher taxes as the cornerstone of President Truman's program. The plan aims to meet the administration's 10 billion dollar tax goal for the year. He outlined two main sources: selective excises and the individual income tax, and pressed for closing loopholes in family partnerships. Turn to TAXES on Page 2.
