Air Force May Draft Threat From Volunteer Shortage
Washington reports the air force cannot meet its June 30 manpower goal of 850,000 due to a volunteer shortage. Enlistments fell from 56,000 in January to 11,000 in May, while the Navy and Marines also saw slackening volunteering. An air force spokesman warned that continued low volunteer enlistments could force reliance on the draft, amid concerns over the quality and quantity of recruits. Strength stands about 737,000 with listed plans and a late June deadline.

385 000 Draft Deferments to End Under New Law
Congressional experts say up to 385000 draft registrants aged 19 to 25 will lose deferments under Truman’s forthcoming draft bill. The act ends dependency deferments for wives, lowers induction age to 18, and prompts Army to ease passing standards while creating a potential rise in 150000 four F classifications. Calls beyond July and August may keep under-19s technically eligible for some time.
