Tornado Kills 3 Rips Texas Town

A Texas South plains tornado killed at least three people and injured more than 100, striking Spade Cotton Center and Hale Center. Fatalities included Mrs. Floyd Shackelford and Mrs. Tom Rice with others dying or injured in Hale Center and surrounding areas. Severe destruction hit Hale Center with damaged city hall fire station hotel bank and three fire trucks.

Downpours and Tornado Strike Hit Midwest and Northeast

Torrential storms drenched the middle Mississippi Valley and the Northeast with more than an inch of rain in places. Damaging floods and a tornado near Plainview caused wreckage north of Cotton Center, with Route traffic rerouted and communications cut for hours. The Weather drove record lows in Burlington Vermont and Buffalo New York.

Civil Service bans personality tests nationwide

The Civil Service Commission announced a ban on using personality tests in any personnel action affecting employees or positions in the competitive service. Chairman John W. Macy Jr said an order to government agencies prohibits such tests, which probe beliefs and attitudes, from job placement or related actions.

A 75 year old Sacramento grocer and a 74 year old Chicago widow who began a romance by mail three years ago will wed. Jack Matranga and Felicia Cuccia obtained a marriage license, Matranga saying he proposed by mail three weeks ago. Cuccia said she has known him since childhood in a Sicilian village.

Police Nab 2 Youths in Auto Stripping Incident

Maricopa County sheriff's deputies arrested two Phoenix youths caught stripping an automobile in the Salt River bottoms near 43rd Avenue. One, 19, was booked for investigation of grand theft auto and the other, 17, confined to the juvenile detention home.

Salt Lake Firm Bids $477 712 on Pinnacle Peak Substation Additions

Jelco Inc of Salt Lake City was the apparent low bidder for a U S Bureau of Reclamation contract to add structures and install equipment at Pinnacle Peak substation within 330 days. Ten bids were received. highest bid reached $655 105 15. Commonwealth Electric Co of Phoenix was the only Arizona bidder. The upgrade enables a second transmission line to carry Glen Canyon power into the Valley.

Johnson reports unemployment hits 91 month low

President Johnson announced the May unemployment rate fell to 4.6 percent from 4.9 percent in April, the lowest since late 1957. He cited a 220000 drop to 3.3 million jobless and said 72.4 million are employed. He warned of a youth unemployment crisis with teens 16 to 21 disproportionately affected.
