The House Armed Services Committee opened the fight over President Johnson's pay proposal calling it disgracefully inadequate and a vote of no confidence in Congress. Rep. L Mendel Rivers introduced the measure but then distanced himself from it.
Arizona Senate-House committee abandons voter registration as a basis for redistricting and sticks to population figures. They call for study of a possible special census to uphold one person one vote while debating how Maricopa County could dominate districts and compromise. Senator Palmer warns against losing northern counties and all three congressmen possibly being from Maricopa. Republic Etta Mae Hutchinson notes at large elections could still favor Maricopa. The State Tax Commission will meet at 1 30 p m tomorrow at the State Capitol to assess railroads and telegraph and telephone companies operating in Arizona.
