Supervisors Vote To Duplicate County Highway Units
Division of Maricopa County highway construction into three units was approved by a majority of supervisors, to take effect February 1. County Engineer Julius Irion said the plan requires substantially more equipment, including at least ten 22,000 pound five yard dump trucks, with six already on order, and about seventy thousand dollars more for trucks and support gear. Supervisor Lecky opposed the move, warning it could drain postwar development funds and hamper federal aid matching. The plan aims to expedite road work and reduce delays by avoiding cross-district equipment shortages.

Grayish bulge spotted on Mars sparks global alert
Albuquerque astronomer Walter Haas and Tsuneo Saheki of Osaka reported a grayish bulge on Mars on January 16. If volcanic ash, the cloud would imply Martian volcanoes, challenging views of Mars as an old, inactive world. Observers were asked to monitor Mars, with Earth approaches expected February 3 and March 23 bringing it closer by about 40 million miles.
