Navy Skyrocket Reaches Near 800 MPH Speed Record
At MAROC AIR BASE California on December 2 the Navy D-558-2 Skyrocket reportedly hit 760 to 800 miles per hour in level flight skimming 30 feet above the ground. Pilot Eugene F May, age 45, steered the rocket jet craft along an eight mile course as observers noted the flight and the craft vanished from sight amid the roar. The official world record stands at 670 mph set by an F 86 jet. May praised the flight as smooth as a kitten s ear.
