Rainfall measured across the Salt River watershed ranged from 4.92 to over 5 inches in 48 hours with Phoenix and Payson stations reporting 2.75 to 3.07 inches. Irrigation districts repaired canal breaks using sandbags and draglines as banks softened and lines were mended to prevent further losses.
In Tokyo Aug 28 UN command says Communists used a private aircraft to simulate a bombing at Kaesong near the armistice talks. No UN planes were over Kaesong. The report claims the scene and investigation were staged for photographers. Ridgway may reject Red calls for a new inquiry and possibly move talks from Kaesong.
The United States Weather Bureau issued two preliminary flood warnings this morning. The first warns that the New River and Hassayampa River may carry more water, increasing flood risk from Litchfield to Gila Bend. The second indicates potential flooding around Florence and Coolidge due to high Gila River waters, with lowland residents urged to take precautions.
Intermittent rain continues in the Valley through today and tomorrow with moderate to heavy rain across the state through tomorrow. Decreasing showers expected after Thursday as cool weather persists.

Five persons were injured when a Pennsylvania passenger mail train left the rails near Sturgis Michigan early today.
The Interstate Commerce Commission approved freight rate hikes that raise costs for meat and threaten broader inflation. Railroads cited higher materials and labor costs, while officials warned defense spending may trigger another inflation spiral this winter.
Eisenhower says strengthening Western Europe may push Russians elsewhere. Johnston warns that rising prices and wages hurt all. Cates credits Korea as a hidden blessing and cautions against war.
Denver August 28 AP A nationwide copper workers strike presses on despite President Truman and federal officials awaiting union responses to their appeal. IUMMSW says it will not end the walkout unless the government pushes industry to accept a wage and pension settlement proposed by the Wage Stabilization Board. The strike affects copper and other metals and involves 58,000 IUMMSW members and 3,400 AFL Metal Trades Union members in Utah. Clark of IUMMSW says no return-to-work request has been received and promises cooperation with government while insisting on board-backed terms.
Denver reports a nationwide copper strike with 58,000 International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers members and 3,400 AFL metal trades workers walking out. About 50 mines, smelters and plants in 15 states produce 95 percent of the copper, led with wage and pension demands affecting major firms like Anaconda, Phelps Dodge, Kennecott, and ASARCO.
The United States Britain and France will provide 50 million dollars in economic aid to Yugoslavia to support Marshal Tito. The ECA announced an initial installment of 29.8 million for cotton coke and steel purchases. Britain to add 11.5 million. France about five million.
Water leakage reported at the new five million VA Hospital at Seventh St and Indian School Rd. Dr. Seymour Fisher called the damage minor. Most drips in the canteen with the kitchen aiding by providing pots and cans for various areas. Engineer Henry Wasielewski said the 200 bed hospital remains under construction and not yet accepted by the U S Army Engineers and the VA.
The AFL formally withdrew from the united labor policy committee today and urged early resumption of talks with the CIO on merging the two large federations.
A Southern Pacific work train with four cars and a locomotive plunged off a submerged track near Arlington about 45 miles west of Phoenix as flood waters severed traffic. The engineer George Boyer and two crew members reached safety in the rail community. all aboard were safe. Rescue efforts and washouts hampered response as Centennal Wash expanded. Luke AFB was cut off by floodwaters. the Agua Fria River rose rapidly, washing away repair work and closing routes to Phoenix-Yuma. DAMAGE note: continued on Page 2.
A special military court in Amman sentenced six men to death for plotting King Abdullahs assassination. Four defendants were acquitted. Col Abdullah El Tel led the convicted list. trial held in absentia in Cairo where he denounced the verdict as a mockery. The slain monarch was killed July 20 near the Mosque of Omar in Jerusalem.
