Special to The Phoenix Gazette reports four inmates escaped Buckeye city jail at 8 a.m. during an early morning break. Night Patrolman Lou Wharff discovered the breach upon returning from patrol, starting an uncaptured incident.
Central Arizona saw scattered thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rain in the Mogollon Rim area while Phoenix remained dry. Diamond Point Lookout logged one inch and Tonto Fish Hatchery 1.11 inches, with rainfall totals varying across upper Tonto Creek and nearby stations as forecasts predict continued thunderstorm activity and warmer, above normal temperatures through the weekend.

Herbert King a 30 year old Indian from Scottsdale was found dead in a wrecked car three miles north of Ehrenberg on a little traveled road after the vehicle overturned three times. A doctor estimated he had been dead for 24 hours. The incident was noted as contributing to Arizona's 1951 traffic fatalities, tallying 225 and 42 more than the prior year.
An A P report from Fort Dix New Jersey describes a T 33 plane crash moments after takeoff from McGuire Air Base that killed thirteen soldiers including twins George and Robert Poole of Camden New Jersey. Eight others burned died later in hospital. The two man crew perished and a 54 man detail was laying communications lines when the crash occurred. In West Los Angeles on Aug 21 a 28 year old armed mental patient, Donald G. LaFuente, resisted detention for hospital observation. After three hours and 11 tear gas grenades, police entered the home and found him hiding in a closet. he surrendered without further incident.

In a residence at 532 W North View two women were found dead from gas while two others were hospitalized in serious condition at Good Samaritan Hospital. The home belonged to John E Redmond of J E Redmond Supply Co. The women’s identities were not immediately established. A yardman nearby alerted Kendall Smith, secretary treasurer of Redmond Co, who confirmed the tragedy. The Redmond family had left two months earlier for a trip to northern Arizona.
A refortified tropical hurricane with 130 mph winds moves toward the central Mexican coast and oil fields. It has claimed 155 lives in Jamaica, threatens Tampico and Veracruz, and may lash areas from Tuxpan to Nautla with squalls and heavy seas affecting the Gulf coast and lower Texas.
Okinawa rode out of the longest typhoon since U S forces occupied the island in 1945 with preliminary reports of only moderate damage. The Aug 21 dispatch notes the storm subsided Monday, leaving infrastructure largely intact and areas awaiting full assessment.
