Washington Aug 20 AP Two Republican senators say a new RFC inquiry shows President Truman and Democratic National Committee Chairman Boyle have carried Pendergast politics to the federal arena. Senator Fulbright denounces the report as partisan while Democrats in a majority report say charges of outside influence on the Reconstruction Finance Corporation are fully substantiated. A sharp minority report by Capehart and Bricker adds stronger language.

Allied and Communist subcommittees met briefly at Kaesong as a new crisis endangers peace negotiations. Tokyo HQ said partisans on both sides may be trying to wreck talks after Red charges of a U N ambush inside Kaesong’s neutral zone. ROK Infantry Captures Hills Held By Reds

South Korean infantry using grenades and bayonets seized four hills in eastern Korea with more hills within reach. Bitter hand to hand fighting stretched from Kumhwa to the east coast as cease fire talks proceed at Kaesong. The Eighth Army cites Reds’ 9,590 casualties over July 28 to Aug 17. Allied air and naval support, plus UN artillery, aided the advance.

Fire Destroys Old Mansion In Isaac District

A two story frame dwelling at 3608 W McDowell in the Isaac district burned out of control before daybreak. Deputies consider arson possible as neighbors saw flames on the second floor and the roof collapse. Spectators recalled many gay social events once held here and described the home as the district’s largest with Juliet balcony and stained glass.

Jamaica Hit By Devastating Hurricane Toll 109 Killed

The hurricane moved from Jamaica into the Gulf of Mexico after a night over land that destroyed property valued at about 56 million dollars. At least 109 people died on Jamaica as the storm intensified and crossed Yucatan then headed toward the Texas border region.

Showers Reach Valley Area Forecast For Today And Tomorrow

Scattered showers fell in north central and southeastern Arizona with thundershowers forecast to reach the Valley today and tomorrow. Prescott reported .706 inches Sunday. Grand Canyon and Douglas near .25 inch. Flagstaff Phoenix Tucson and Payson had only sprinkles. Watershed stations noted good rains Saturday but runoff was limited. Ridge stations near Payson and Cordes reported showers. temperatures ranged 106 to 80 in the Valley this morning.

Five Violent Deaths Occur Over Weekend

Five people died during a weekend in Arizona from drowning, traffic crashes, and a heart attack. Pete Hernandez 34 and J O Nolan 42 drowned. Dr C Michael Witzberger 45 killed in a one car crash near Globe. Adeline Jones 28 injured in an earlier crash near El Mirage died. Samuel M Warren 39 had a fatal heart attack while driving at Ninth Ave and Grant, crashing into a palm tree.

Navy Secretary Kimball Sees War Odds Improve Slightly

Washington August 20 Navy Secretary Kimball said the chances of avoiding a third World War have improved slightly in six months but remain a guess on whether Russia would start a full-scale war. Armistice Proposal Letters Sent to U N Front Lines

United Nations patrols across the front in Korea have found three days of ungrammatical letters urging an informal armistice between U N and Chinese Communist forces while cease fire talks continue at Kaesong. The notes were left along the front or delivered by farmers under a white flag.

Blast Kills 22 on Oil Tanker Dromus

Two explosions aboard the Shell Oil tanker Dromus at Bukom Island wharf near Singapore killed 22 men and injured 30 others. Two were missing feared trapped in flaming cabins. The dead included three British sailors. Cause of blasts and fire not determined.

Jet Cats officer dies in Korea jet crash

Marine Maj. Frank S. Hoeffecker, executive officer of a Panther jet squadron called the Jet Cats, was killed on August 12 when his plane crashed during a combat mission. Fifth Air Force Headquarters confirmed the loss in a delayed AP report dated August 19.

Fort Huachuca Guard Training In High Gear

Fort Huachuca training for nearly 2,000 members of the 158th Regimental Combat Team intensified as they reported to the rifle range for qualification firing.
