Union Refuses Strike Delay At Kennecott

In Salt Lake City on August 18 an AFL Metal Trades Council led union group of 12 unions at Kennecott Copper rejected Cyrus Ching mediation calls to delay a planned strike by 3,000 Utah workers. After 80 days of talks with no agreement, the union insisted on proceeding the walkout while remaining open to talks if Kennecott shifts its position. The union cited copper supply needs, noted 50 days past contract expiration, and referenced Kennecott's 1950 profits and defense concerns as support for continued production. It also claimed a willingness to withdraw seven demands if management adopts current armed-forces employee treatment practices.
