Reds Plotting Coup in Philippines Warned by State Department
The State Department reported that Huk guerrillas aim to overthrow the Philippine government by November to May through force arson and murder. A pamphlet warned the Red movement must not be underestimated, noting a recruiting drive ending next month could swell fighters from 10,000 to 200,000. It said Philippine Defense Department actions may be weakening the Huk forces.

Rifleman Atop Peak Balks Posse
A 56 year old prospector Millard Carmean perched on a mountain peak above a 200 foot chasm in Durango Colorado while an eight man sheriff posse deliberated how to lure him down without gunfire. After shots were exchanged, the sheriff ordered a retreat and planned to attempt a careful descent with a smaller party. Notes found at his brother’s home indicated Carmean planned death by his own action and directed disposal of his property. Additional notes at his camp gave a signal plan. The posse could not locate him at the designated spot and continued searching rugged terrain. The aurora borealis line is noted as running through several northern regions.
