Washington dispatch details a 1918 letter from Joseph R Hamien at Red Cross HQ explaining equal aid to white and colored troops. It notes knitted goods emergency supplies and nursing plans while awaiting War Department decisions on Black Red Cross nurses.
The Colored Republican League of New Jersey voted against State Senator Lewis T. Stevens of Cape May for the short term U S Senate. They endorsed David Baird and named Powell K. Martin to draft the resolution. Isaac H. Nutter of Atlantic leads the organization amid criticism Stevens opposed Afro American welfare bills and a rider to the Glover Bill related to damaged awards benefiting poor overseers.
Senator Johnson of California urged the administration to explain why Major General Leonard Wood remains at home instead of leading his division in France. He read extracts from a vart and said the nation deserves an answer, noting the government’s lack of a public rationale.
President Wilson signed a bill providing a minimum pension of 30 dollars for all Civil War veterans, making the measure law.
Rev. George B. Howa, 63, pastor of a new Baptist church in Pittsburgh, collapsed and died just before entering the pulpit. He had been ill for some time but was considered out of danger earlier. Born in Charlottesville, Va., he studied at Hamp ton, Storer and Union University.
In Hattiesburg Mississippi on June 13 the Camp Shelby authorities discuss taxi service for colored soldiers. An order required drivers to carry colored passengers, but many cabbies refused and had licenses pulled by military police. Drivers oppose mixed seating, citing Jim Crow laws. some offer separate cars. Brigadier General Hudson reviews the issue.
National War Savings Day is set for June 28 with campaigns from the National War Savings Committee and state and local groups urging every citizen to pledge to save and buy War Savings stamps. The drive links patriotic duty with thrift and future security as funds support the front lines.
At DuPont powder plants in Carney's Point about 2200 colored men are employed with pay up to 100 dollars biweekly. The colored Y M C A is stabilizing workers by directing earnings into beneficial channels and reducing gambling through social and religious programs led by L H Midgette and aides. DuPont officials back the effort as a brighter future for the community dawns.
The Attucks Circle for War Relief met twice in the past week at Olympia Auditorium and Musical Hall to raise a million dollar fund for wounded colored officers and soldiers. Rev. William H. Moses and Rev. George Frazier Miller led the talks, and music was provided by the 50th F. A. Band of Camp Dix.
War Department plans to send about 4000 colored drafted men to colleges and schools this summer for training in radio engineering general engineering electricity and motor vehicle care. Institutions include Howard Tuskegee Hampton Prairie View Atlanta University and more. Upon graduation they will be assigned to regiments of colored troops. The National Army lists about 157000 colored men with 1000 holding officer commissions.
Washington June 10 A national anti rent profiteering bill was introduced in the House by Representative George P Darrow of Philadelphia The measure would cover cities over 30 000 population and base rent on April 6 1917 the entry date of the United States into the war Any increases must be written and if exceeding tax rises require District Court approval The court must hear eviction appeals Violation carries up to 1000 fine one year in jail or both
A correspondent praising Black troops reports a successful attack in the vicinity. The piece notes the forest running southwest of the Marquegisse area between Perte farm and Loges farm is recaptured.
A group of individuals posed as U S Navy ensigns and wore officers uniforms. The ruse drew wide comment as a colored ensign in the Navy was previously unknown. The uniforms were allegedly ordered by a tailor for the group.
A night clash at 13th and Olive streets left two men stabbed, one a policeman. The injured officer is John Carter, 36, of the 16th and Buttonwood streets station, stabbed in Gabach and Sammest Gent near 13th. Potter, also colored, 13th and streets, was arrested for the stabbing.
New York June 12 Charles W Anderson long time Supervising Agent for the Statement of Food Street lathe and former New York District Internal Revenue collector has been made honorary colonel of the 367th United States Infantry. The honor cites his work organizing colored regiments and aiding the government in other ways. He helped recruit colored men, introduced Colonel Haywood to the enlistment meeting forming the Fifteenth Infantry, assisted in building Camp Upton’s auditorium, and opposed efforts to curb colored participation in the war. He has served on Draft Board No. 139 since July 1917.
Washington June 12 reports that checks for April pay and Government insurance for dependents of soldiers were mailed on Friday May 24 from Washington. If a check is missing it likely means an error in the payee address and the Risk Insurance Bureau should be contacted promptly.
Springfield June 10 The colored citizens complain the park board draws the color line at Bunn Park denying colored children use of the baths and beach at pleasure parks. Illinois needs a political house cleaning as it moves backward.
Colored men of the First Congressional district under De Priest met last Saturday night and nominated James A. Beott former assistant United States attorney for Congress on the Republican ticket in opposition to Martin.
An Alabama colored soldier in an Army unit with French troops used a novel ruse to capture German messenger dogs. He hunted a fox, crawled across No Man's Land at night, and dragged the fox to the American trenches. The next day six German dogs entered the American line. the tactic disrupted the German despatch dogs.

The nineteenth annual commencement exercises of the Berean Manual Training and Industrial School were held at Berean Presbyterian church on June 6. Diplomas and certificates were awarded to students in stenography, plumbing, upholstering, dressmaking, and more. Dr. W E Burghardt Du Bois delivered the annual address on Educational Systems for the blacks.
Camp Meade Maryland June 12 colored graduates of the third officers training school are commissioned as second lieutenants. Names include Burrell Tillman Ransom Venson Joseph Oliver Wm Evans Jr Willis Dickerson Lee Warrick Harold Lacy Herman Johnson Meredith Ferguson Joseph Anderson Earl Lawson Thomas Williamson Allan Freelon. An order transfers all troops from the 79th Division to other camps clearing Camp Meade of colored troops.
Plattsburg New York June 7 Company Hi at the new officers training camp for college students faced friction as Southerners clashed with colored men. Two colored students were assigned, vanished that night, were intercepted by Colonel Dentler who returned them. All Southerners have been transferred from Company H and one more colored student remains.
Washington reports the May 25 crop condition at 82.3 percent of normal, best in ten years except 1911, forecasting a crop near record proportions. Officials note a later crop, good stand, increased fertilizer use, and improving seed quality, with area planted pending July figures.
Professor Kelly Miller Dean of Howard University spoke at Cheyney Training School for Teachers on Sunday afternoon. He urged leaders to gain education and vision, emphasize service, and uphold righteousness to guide the Negro people toward strong leadership. Belgium and Germany were cited as examples of moral lessons in leadership and democracy.
A one legged colored youth, Everett Price of Providence, was captured after breaking into Lennox Apartments at 13th and Spruce, stealing shoes, and threatening a man with a toy gun. Charles Anderson restrained him, wrested the weapon, and Price was held without bail for court.

Brooklyn New York on June 10 held a dedication for the new colored branch of the Y M C A with exercises and a banquet. Governor Whitman delivered the main address praising the valor of the colored troops in France and the $200000 modern facility.
Indiana Harbor Indiana June 10 The Indiana Steel Co has taken into its service 70 colored women as laborers The company has been unable for some time to secure sufficient laborers and recently offered high wages to women to handle light steel castings and to perform ordinary laborers work
In Washington the Senate approved a pension increase by a 36 to 22 vote. The measure would add 35 million dollars annually to the pension program, benefiting retirees aged 72 years and older.
Nashville Tenn June 10 The publishing house of the C. M. E. Church will be moved from Jackson to this city once machinery can be dismantled and shipped without interfering with publication work.
The twenty six annual reunion of the Lewis Robinson Reading and related families gathered to share memories and updates. Attendees exchanged greetings and plan future gatherings while reminiscing about old hometown ties.
Rev J Stanley Durkee chosen unanimously as Howard University president by the board of trustees. He is a 50 year old Nova Scotia native with a PhD from Boston University. Durkee is noted for liberal views on race, advocacy for education and economic advancement of Black communities, and broad, inclusive church work.
Washington June 12 The fate of nationwide prohibition rests with President Wilson Ison. If he consents a bone-dry law is expected to pass Congress covering the war period. Wilson opposes Rand amendments in the agricultural bill arguing they would end light wines and beer, while allowing whiskey sales. Prohibitionists anticipate a straight prohibition bill once consent is secured and passage in both houses is predicted.
In Chester on June 2 two highwaymen stopped Michael Locco and Samuel Sorrell after church near St. Anthony's Catholic Church and forced them to surrender $115. Police arrested Edward Ware and Harry Irwin, both described as colored, later that afternoon.
The office will close at 1 o clock on Saturdays during June July and August.
