War Paintings at Memorial Hall Marred by Flaws
Readings from Memorial Hall Boston critique two newly installed Massachusetts historical canvases The Return of the Colors by Edward Simmons and Arrival of the Pilgrims by Henry Oliver Walker draw praise for color and tone but draw critique for composition and historical accuracy Veterans recall the 1865 ceremony and challenge the depictions of Governor Andrew and the color bearers while noting the Pilgrims scene conveys dread over landfall. Two more works John Eliot Preaching to the Indians and Fight at Concord Bridge are planned with contracts totaling $24 000 for Simmons Walker and Reed.
