Servant Dies After Coal Oil Explosion at Brown Home

Ten years after J W Turner’s conversion at Fourth Baptist Church he began a mission in a room at Front and Moore Streets. He preached to seamen and urged brothel inmates to visit, drawing hundreds away from vice. A brick church now stands on the original site, and the Messina captain became a convert. An infidel owner funded a new mission church with $1,000 and built a large floating church, The Pilots' Mission, with two captains, two mates and twenty-five sailors aboard nightly.
