It is reported from Juneau that blanks and supplies for conscription registration in Alaska have been received and will be mailed to towns and voting precincts. The governor will set a date for registration after mailing interior supplies, while Washington estimates 13 943 men aged 21 to 30 in the territory.
Postmaster Refling has been instructed that any regular army enlistment applications must be sent to the recruiting officer at Fort Seward who will arrange for applicants to be examined.
Ships sailing from Seattle include the Dolphin and the City of Seattle with others like the Admiral Farragut, Jefferson, and Al-Ki on current or upcoming voyages. Weekly fish shipments list Glacier and Ripley companies with halibut, black cod, salmon, and trout, while H Worthen and Jack Hanseth report timber trips and a bear kill on Prince of Wales Island. Mrs. T. K. Thorvilson sent 25.05 dollars to the Belgian Children's Fund. Mr. and Mrs. John Rustgard of Juneau visited Seattle during Spokane’s port call.
London reports May saw 713 aircraft shot down on the western front with 442 German planes and 271 British and French. April’s toll was 709, reflecting ongoing aerial combat in the region.
Washington June 8 The house passed the sundry civil bill with Alaska appropriations and it now awaits Senate action. Nominations for Alaska and judge re appointment were reported or confirmed by the senate. Various war and international notes follow with dispatches from Copenhagen Rome Paris Seattle and others. A Peters burg death and local notices are also listed.
Paris reports an American battleship squadron arriving off the coast. The collier Jupiter brings two thousand tons of wheat and provisions for U S troops. A gunner on the Silver Shell sinks a submarine after strong naval exchange. Kronstadt revolt ends with provisional government authority restored. Lord Northcliffe succeeds Balfour in Britain and heads a commission to America.
Olympia June 8. A sufficient number of signatures to refer end the Washington bone dry law to the people has been obtained. The law remains ineffective until approved by voters at the November 1918 election.
A mass meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday at 7 30 p m at the Fire hall to organize Fourth of July celebrations. George Nicholson Town Marshal announces the gathering.
The two-cent stamp tax on checks and drafts is under review as part of the war revenue bill. The measure seeks to raise revenue during wartime by taxing negotiable instruments.
