The issue notes the legislature opening on the 21st and a January 6 birth. It covers municipal electors declarations, council plans for February 1, and reeve and council elections on February 18 and 25. It reports church service changes, a Presbyterian move, and a Baptist opening delayed. A PBC gathering honors Mrs. McNeill with a handbag as W. Kearns speaks, ending with Auld Lang Syne.
The Penticton Boys Club held its annual dinner at Mrs. McNeil's home on Wednesday the 29th at 6:30. Twenty three boys dined on turkey and plum pudding as Mrs. Thompson led the event and Mrs. McNeil assisted. Toasts followed with responses from Horace Lister F Kearns Corwyn Lancaster and C A Thompson among others.
Kelowna's municipally owned electric lighting plant began operation on Christmas Eve with twenty one street lamps and about one hundred houses lit. The steam powered plant, installed by Morse Co, will also power lake water pumping for a new domestic water system. Total cost for water works and lighting is about sixty thousand dollars.
A correspondence to the editor cites Dr Charles Crompton of the U S Internal Revenue Department arguing denatured alcohol serves diverse industries and domestic needs. The writer highlights light heat and power applications while lamenting social ills from alcohol abuse.
A citizen named Noland urges municipal organization to form a Board of Health with full power to curb dangers threatening the town. He argues residents have an inalienable right to self governance and to protect moral and material interests under local option, promising decisive action against nuisances.
Midland Ontario in 1908 reports that local option has improved hotel accommodation and business while liquor sales move from “blind pigs” to licensed hotels. Employers prefer staying with local option, few blind pigs are convicted, and neighboring towns are adopting the measure.
Electors are called to the Penticton Court House on January 18 at noon to elect a Reeve and Councillors. Nominations must be written and signed by two voters, delivered to the Returning Officer by 2 pm on nomination day. If a poll is needed, it opens January 25 at the Court House. Charles Were Penticton Returning Officer will attend at the Court House from January 11 to January 16 between 1 and 6 pm to receive names of those wishing to vote in the upcoming election.
Notice announces an application to BC Legislative Assembly for incorporation of The Kettle River Valley Railway Company to build a standard gauge line from Midway to Penticton and from Penticton to Nicola, with telegraph and telephone lines, water powers, and rights to lease other lines. Dated Vancouver December 19, 1908. Cowan and Parkes are solicitors for the applicants.
