Pendleton announces Joe Shirley V M D will resume the practice of his deceased brother after receiving his degree May Peel. The note signals a planned professional return by the practitioner in the community.
MoPaE's 1800 piece ensemble leads a Stars and Stripes color guard parade on the home stretch prior to the Eleventh International 500 mile Sweepstakes at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 30. Purdue University 90 piece band, Indiana University, Northwestern, and Piqua high school join university and college groups across the Midwest.
The community was stunned as Dr Ray Shirley a rising local veterinarian was found dead in his Pendleton office Friday morning. A chloroform-soaked towel and empty bottle were found beside him after Cecil Carmichael of Pendleton alerted authorities. The coroner and prosecutor questioned twelve people, including picnic companions Hortense Meister Ruby West Martha Coup Cecil Carmichael and Dr John Blake. Miss Doris Farmer, a former sweetheart, was also connected to the case in a late night meeting. reconciliation efforts failed. Funeral services were held at the M E Church with many local organizations in attendance.
The Christian Brotherhood has secured Dr. W R Cady a noted lecturer from the Dennis Lyceum and United Chautauqua Bureaus for a May 10 public entertainment in the church main auditorium. He will present The Birth and Death of Worlds with scientific star and nebula imagery and demonstrations. The free lecture, praised nationwide, promises a high standard of science and popular presentation.
The flour guessing contest at Pendleton Elevator Co. ended in ties across first to fourth prize. First prize three tied at 129 pounds while the correct weight was 128½ pounds. Nine runners-up held close guesses, and an honor roll of new subscribers to The Times is listed.
The Christian Woman's Board of Missions was hosted by Mrs. J. J. Rogers on S Broad way with a fine program led by Mrs. Rogers. A nominating committee was formed and Mrs. D J Thornton joined the group. Attendees included Mrs. Haines Marlowe Raid Apple Thorn ton Evans Thomas and others. next June meeting to be hosted by Mrs. R F Thomas. The Country Club gathered with Mrs. George Kinnard on Broadway Street.
Anderson Commandery Knights Templar and Pendleton Chapter Royal Arch Masons plan Ascension Day services at United Brethren Church next Sunday at 2 45 p m. A special car will bring Sir Knights to Pendleton for a parade down Pendleton Avenue to High Street. Rev A C Wilmore to give the address and the Knights Templar to render the ritual service. Public invited.
Street work on Pendleton Avenue between the Union Traction Company tracks progresses rapidly. Brick is laid in cement and new steel has been installed through the street. The curve at High Street has been lengthened, marking another major improvement.
Pendleton’s Ideal Bakery owner Mr. W Browsing reports rapid growth and plans to boost capacity with additional machinery. He invites all to a box social at the high school building on Saturday night May 5 at 7 30 PM.
The Community Forum at the M. E. Church Sunday night featured Mrs. Charles Darlington on safety assets and Rev. Powell praising local church work. Prof. Miner urged a community playground and supervision. Rev. Powell closed with a brief sermon. Next Sunday guests Mrs. William Swain and Mr. Albert Reep. Special music planned.
Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Ireland returned Monday from Marion where they had lived the past year. Mr. Ireland left Tuesday morning for Wilmington, Ohio to resume his work with the National Manufacturing and Engineering Company.
