Opening day crowd at Logal Fair far exceeded last year as directors praised the event. Many visitors entered the pavilion in the evening and a splendid concert by Journal Rand drew large attendance. Exhibits were described as the finest in years, and the Farmers' Union presented its first exhibit.
The Oregon Journal presents a March concert featuring Barbre Marie Overture Light Cavalry and The Chocolate Soldier selections. conductor Key Major Charles E York leads the ensemble with a medley of American war songs and diverse solos including Mexican Danza Querida and Forget Me Not.
The Pioneer Day speaking program was postponed to tonight under the aegis of the Umatilla County Pioneer association with President J T Lievallen presiding. Oregon Historical Society secretary George H Himes will be chief speaker, joined by Col J H Raley and John Gurdane among local speakers. The fair drew larger attendance than its opening day, aided by favorable weather and the absence of a 26 cent admission, while stores stayed open later. The Journal band delivered a well received program. Tomorrow is Farmers' Union Day. other days include Political Day, Hermiston Day, Portland Day and Stanfield Day, with the baby show and a union exhibit adding to the program.
Pueblo Colorado delegates prepared two resolutions urging state control of irrigation works and opposing federal power. A split vote is expected at the national irrigation congress with a minority report possible. Pipchet plans to oppose state conservation Thursday as the topic was irrigation by private enterprise. Frank Goody and George Barstow led morning talks, with Director Newell of the reclamation service speaking in the afternoon.
Winnipeg board of trade presses for inquiry into telegraph firms operating in Canada. Chairman Mabee of the board of Railroad Commissioners for Canada says he will ask the minister of justice in Ottawa to investigate alleged toll discrimination favoring the east and disadvantaging the west.
A touring car driven by Charles McBee collided with a cab on Main Street, throwing McBee and ejecting Mrs Ed Barr who sustained a fractured thigh and other injuries. McBee, a stockman, and Mrs Barr are hospitalized with serious but recoverable injuries. Chester Reed, an East Oregonian carrier boy, rode in the back. The car crashed onto the sidewalk near the office saloon as a crowd fled. Witnesses hesitate to assign blame. McBee is regarded as a careful driver. The accident is Pendleton's most serious since autos became common.
Springfield Massachusetts hosts the Massachusetts Christian Endeavor Union state convention for the third time in its 21 year history. A conference of state district and local officials met in the afternoon and a public session was scheduled for the evening.
At Saratoga on Sept 27 Theodore Roosevelt won the post of temporary chairman after a bitter fight at the New York Republican convention. The split factions clashed as Sherman was backed for the role and Roosevelt faced off against the old guard in a tense session that required police to clear the floor before a vote.
Memphis Tenn September 27 Tennessee Arkansas and Missouri industries and arts are well represented as the Tri State fair opens in Memphis highlighting regional manufacturing and crafts with visitors expected to attend.
West Point cadets mutiny over Captain Longan being silenced during an investigation. About 560 cadets refused to answer questions, suspending routine work and signaling possible mass dismissals. Upperclassmen actions, harsh discipline, and canceled activities fueled escalating tensions at the military academy.
A $250 prize saddle, hailed as the finest ever made in Oregon, is showcased at Hamley & Son on Court Street. Silver mounted with dollars, white lamb skin lining, snowflake leather, and bronco roping and bronco busting scenes mark a Pendleton made article crafted for the Roundup. The saddle bears Roundup branding and Pendleton Championship Laddle 1910 inscriptions, awaiting the winner of the northwestern bronco busting contest.
In New Orleans on September 27 sheriffs posses and bloodhounds hunted train robbers who robbed the mall car of the California limited. Five malt pouches and two sacks of registered mail were seized. The bandits fled into a swamp after the car was halted and the passengers were unharmed.
Seattle officials moved to back Acting Mayor Wardell as he campaigns to purge graft from city government officials and departments. The council's posture came as Police Chief Waspenstein returned from Los Angeles amid a public search for Mayor Gill. In separate dispatches Hearst, in Paris, signaled support for Taft over Roosevelt, criticizing Roosevelt's methods as noisy and unsettled.
Joseph Saltmarsh a prominent farmer living ten miles south of Pendleton was found dead at his farm where his daughter Bessie said he had taken a gun to shoot a coyote. The coroner suspects an accidental discharge occurred while placing the loaded gun in the corner. Survived by four children Etheline Carl Bessie and Earl Saltmarsh a marine in the Philippines.
Chicago on September 27 Walter Brookins a Wright pupil ascended in an aeroplane and encircled the lake front several times rising to two thousand feet. It is estimated that two hundred thousand people witnessed the flight.
Spokane residents vote to form a commission government by electing fifteen free holders to revise the city charter under the Des Moines plan. Official action centers on adopting a commission system for Spokane's municipal governance.
Indiana Federation of Labor opens its annual meeting in La Fayette with delegates from nearly all locals, drawing thousands of visitors expected over the next three days for the statewide labor celebration ending with events and speeches.
Victoria September 27 Lieutenant Governor Patterson formally opened the 50th annual fair of the British Columbia Agricultural Association this afternoon.
Domodossola Sept 27 Chavez the aviator injured in a flight over the Alps died this afternoon from his injuries.
Milton candidate edges hike opponent by a narrow margin. Henneman Wilson leads Barrett in Umatilla County by 27 votes. Barrey slightly ahead in Union and Morrow. Weet defeats Myers as Bean runs strong. Juder and Bean post notable race strain in events.
Latest returns at 2 pm show Barrett slightly ahead of F Wilson for joint senator. Official tally incomplete. Union county officials may recount as precincts allegedly erred counting Democratic votes on the Republican side.
Complete counts received at 3 15 give Barrett a 46 vote majority over Wilson. In the Democratic primaries West wins governor nomination over Myers, Lane leads Manning for congress, and Judge Bean carries the supreme bench race by about a thousand votes in his home county. Republican nominees listed with complete counts for several offices.
