Frances H. Bartlett and S. J. Campbell address a crowd on Irrigation and Fruit. McElroy's Band delivers an excellent program. Thousands expected to enter the pavilion tonight as Tomorrow features Pioneers' Day and Red Men's Night.
With all business suspended and a strong turnout the third Eastern Oregon District Agricultural Society opened its fair at 1 06 pm. Exhibits show improved booth preparation and crowds are growing despite a smaller opening display. Francis H Bartlett spoke on Tri ntions and S J Campbell on Fruit while McElroy’s military band drew strong applause. Parade turnout was lighter than expected, but more pedestrians filled the pavillon avenues as stores closed for the event.
New York September 27 featured the dedication of the Interstate park with fourteen miles of palisades along the Hudson. Visiting warships were hosted by local officials and a reception was planned at the Metropolitan Opera House for foreign representatives.

Engin eers Union No 83 of Butte ends the strike in 45 mines by reentering the Western Federation of Miners. Ten thousand workers who quit will resume work soon. Four thousand start tonight on the night shift. Of the 60 engineers, 266 have applied for Western Federation cards. Mine owners supported the settlement.
Toledo Ohio September 27 veteran first baseman Jake Beckley retired from baseball today after doffing his uniform and marking the close of his team’s season. For three years he has covered shortstop for the Kan mieity term of the American association and refused offers to join Topeka or Western leagues at high salaries, saying he has given up baseball for good.
Three robbers who tried to loot Farmers Savings Bank were surrounded by a posse near Cordova. A volley of shots occurred as officers approached. The criminals had dynamited the vault and the building. They then dynamited a safe at Adelphi and took ten dollars.
New York dispatch reports Commander Peary refused to allow Henry Whitney to bring Cook’s instruments and data aboard the Roosevelt. Scientists say the delay could push confirmation of the North Pole discovery by a year. Cook insists Eskimo companions are returning with instruments, but skeptics doubt arrival before next Arctic winter.
In South Harpewel Maine on September 27 Commander Peary headed to Bar Harbor to confer with General Hubbard about resuming charges against Conk. Peary declared if the Roosevelt reaches Sandy Hook he will address the public from the ship's bridge claiming the man who found the north pole stands on the Roosevelt's bridge.
Forbes Robertson, the noted English actor, arrived from London to begin a limited American run in The Passing of the Third Floor Back at Maxine Elliott's theater. He will be supported by an English company during the engagement starting next Monday.
Indiana bartenders gather in South Bend for the annual state convention opening today. Sessions run during the event as the State Federation of Labor meeting is set to begin tomorrow, signaling joint labor activity and professional discussions.
Plans expand for a two day bronco busting event tied to the district fair next Friday and Saturday. Pittsburg Sept 27 Two people are reported dead and about fifty injured after an explosion at the Columbian Film exchange. A nervous panic followed the blaze as Roy Barclay a 17 year old elevator boy, stayed at his post guiding people to safety. Among the injured are Edith Stark Ink Brown Ella Mulbrunner M G Cohen and twenty Smith-Premier Typewriter Company workers. Ferguson building damaged and adjoining tenants ordered to vacate. No bodies yet found.
In Seattle at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific exposition arena Bert Warner accused Dr. H. F. Roller of conspiring for two straight falls. After a heated moment Warner was allowed to attempt two falls but Roller won in a 1 hour 18 minute match amid intense action and controversy.
The eastern Oregon medical association will hold its largest gathering yet with delegates from 12 counties and leading physicians from Spokane Bellingham and Portland. Wives accompany delegates. sessions run all day with a dinner at Hotel Bowman at 10 p m hosted by Pendleton members.
The general tariff board led by President Ewing, Reynolds, and Alvin H. Saunders will continue meetings this week to study foreign tariffs. A report due by March 1 could trigger a 25 percent tariff increase on imports unless the president issues a proclamation granting minimum rates to non-discriminating countries.
Taft toured the Leonard Copper mine shaft 1800 feet deep and watched drills at the 1200 foot level then spoke to a large crowd on the court house square. He then traveled to Helena after receiving a full sized copper silver and gold golf stick presented by Mayor Nevin.

Ogden Utah Sept 27 A veteran railroad engineer Charlie Paull directs Tafts special from Ogden to Pocatello Idaho. In five decades he has never seen a wreck and has survived washouts landslides and holdups while at the throttle for McKinley and Roosevelt western tours. His only injury came from a fall from a chicken coop last summer breaking his arm.
Jesse Townsend of McMinnville Oregon is charged with shooting and killing James Lawrence a farmer and father of ten after a charivari party disrupted Townsend’s wedding. Townsend awakened by the crowd fired his rifle killing Lawrence and surrendered to party members. Also reports Madrid says Rif tribesmen surrender ending war with Moors and Spanish capture Selouan.
Berlin reports Hullbert Latham, Frenchman, completed a seven mile ascent from Tempehot field to Johannesthal aero dome in seven minutes. The crowd watched the high speed flight during a long anticipated aerial showcase. The time noted was unofficial.
