Lincoln Neb Sept 24 Cha grinned over the smothering of his bank guarantee plank in yesterday's Republican convention and charging bankers with conspiring to suppress his legislative scheme Governor Sheldon notified the convention he would not remain on the ticket unless it was explicit he favors the bank guarantee system if elected.
Washington report notes President Roosevelt to reply to William Jennings Bryan's demand for evidence in the Haskell-Heary scandal. W C Haskell, former US marshal in Ohio and district of Columbia weights and measures official, meets the president to discuss charges tied to Monett and Standard prosecutions. Governor Curry of New Mexico also visited the White House.
Washington Sept 23 Secretary Loch said Roosevelt will respond to Bryans telegram, but the message is long and the full reply will be released this evening. Hearst presses new attacks on Governor Haskell alleging stock sale links and broker accounts in New York railroads.
Columbus reports Monel left at sunrise after a midnight call from Mr. Bryan to discuss alleged bribery attempts by Governor Haskell. Monel will provide Bryan with information on the case.
Columbus centers on the presidential campaign as Monett repeats charges against Haskell to Bryan and Democratic leaders. He refuses to exonerate Haskell from involvement in a fund receipt tied to Standard Oil, citing hearsay and a statement from Charles Squire that Haskell filed part of the funds. Squire named Haskell on January 25, 1909, while a grand jury probe was promised to reveal the facts. Washington reports Roosevelt will not reply to a telegram received.
Abe Reuf ordered his chauffeur to ram in front of a runaway auto to halt the out of control vehicle driven by Misses Cox. The two girls were thrown from the car with one seriously hurt. Reuf piloted the unconscious rider to hospital as his own car suffered major damage.

Fires sweep the area around Lakes Superior and Huron with many homesteads burned. Butternut resident Julius Kyweh J. dies from smoke as fires breach lines near Barkiver and Ashland Wisconsin. Communication cut off at Grandview on the Omaha line.
In a renewed circuit court session the Hawkes vs Slusher damage suit proceeds over a horse and buggy loss from a cliff incident after a fight near Nolin. Hawkes, a Behoo teacher, testifies that a gate caused the mishap and Slusher sought settlement. Witnesses include Steele Means Webber and Dinckamith. Lawyers: Lowell Winter for Hawkes. Col Raley Richardson for Slusher. Two suspects plead guilty to crimes in Athena: Lethridge for forgery, Grant for robbery. sentences: three and two years.
In Philadelphia a fog bound collision between Philadelphia and Chester trolley cars left at least seven dead and seventy injured. Motormen could not see ahead as trains sped, with many workers from nearby factories among the passengers.
Intense indignation in China over an incident aboard the Haut Reou of Messageries Maritimes. Chinese authorities sought to arrest suspected pirates. the ship's captain, backed by the French consul, refused, claiming arrest on landing. Pirates escaped during the ensuing commotion as the captain was later removed for alleged friendliness with foreigners. The native press Po diva calls for a French boycott and harshly criticizes the French consul.
Tacomi residents lament distressing disturbances caused by a Holy Roller sect using a local hall above undertakers. Disturbances occur during services with loud talking in tongues and continual noise, preventing peaceful burial services and prompting complaints to authorities.
In Elkton Maryland on September 23 a Baltimore and Ohio freight train plunged into the Delaware River after the east span of Port Deposit bridge gave way. Fifteen cars derailed into the river, with the engine and first out already crossing. It is believed all crew escaped.
Seattle dispatch reports Portland will receive the transcontinental line of the Pacific system with Portland as its northern terminal per President Winchert statement. He said the company does not seek the coast and aims to connect the Northwest with the North Pacific route.
In Wrangell Alaska one hundred ten men including Captain Wagner die when the cannery bark Sur of Bengal wrecks off Coronation Island. Twenty seven survivors report harsh exposure, graves dug for comrades, and accusations that tug captains Hattle Gage and Kayak abandoned the ship. The Burnside cable ship surveys total wreck and wreckage strewn beach.
In Spokane on September 23, Allien Tinnes tay confessed an attempt to dynamite Officer Mead's home. He blamed a Spokane surgeon for malpractice causing years of severe pain. He said his letters threatened dynamite while in agony.
Puget Sound Navy Yard reports officers examined the interior of the cruiser Colorado and found no leak after repairs. The ship listed heavily while in drydock due to coal shifting in bunkers, not damage from the grounding on August 18.
Fruit growers in The Dalles report English sparrows damaging peaches by pecking and eating fruit. Sparrows breed rapidly and nest multiple times yearly, threatening the season. Orchards plan to destroy nests and continue measures to ex terminate the birds in the coming year.
Two small attachments suits were filed in the circuit court today. M. K R. Reeves sues J. D. Morrow for 190 dollars with complaint filed by A. Newberry. William El lia sues W. A. Parnell to collect 170 dollars, with D. B. Perry filing the last named complaint.
Beaumont Texas Sept 23 Bitter feeling oversees Hon Thomas Hisgen presidential candidate of the Independence league after his attack on Senator Bailey at a last night meeting. When asked Hisgen again attacked Bailey. Judge D H Hardy ex secretary of a fight when Water-Pierce Oil was allowed to re enter the state took exceptions to the remark that Bailey was responsible for readmission.
New Westminster Sept 24 His lordship Bishop Dontenwill head of the Roman Catholic diocese of New Westminster is appointed superior general of the order of oblates of Mary Immaculate. Official telegram from Rome confirms the life appointment and residence in Rome.
Mrs Martha G Beck aged 78 died at her home in North Yakima after a pneumonia illness. A pioneer teacher, she served in the first public school in this area after coming to Yakima in 1860s.
Visitors in Portland for the Pacific National show praise the event as superior to Lewie and Clark and rivaling Chicago’s famed livestock expositions. Judges deem 2700 head of horses cattle sheep and swine worthy of high notice as exhibitors fill 120 pavilions and stock barns. Sept 23 in Condon Mrs Bert Rose a bride of one month and under 15 years old shot herself in the temple during a fit of insanity. She and husband Mr Bert Rose a rancher who is about 20 years old were in town Sunday morning. Coroner's jury returns death by her own action.
El Paso Texas Sept 24 A mob left George Clark alias Heard hanging but Clark survived all night. He was found dangling and cut down then rushed to a hospital. A second mob is forming as Clark faces an accusation of shooting Constable W H Taylor who tried to arrest him at Shero.
San Francisco registration officers faced a crowd as residents flocked to register for the campaign. Officials say interest remains light and estimate at most 700,000 voters may register, amid a crowded registration day on September 23.
