New York Sept 10 A night long conference steadied the opening of trading as millions flooded the stock market. Harriman interests gained support across regions and saw shares rise despite the crisis. Report notes Harriman’s death influenced decisions and calls his associates to act, with major enterprises feeling the impact.
London reports no break in American securities as Harriman dies. New York financiers who aided the market cabled London with the result, keeping the market steady.

Geo Shoemaker foreman of the Whatcom Falla Mil company was fatally stabbed by logger Hugh Finnan after intervening in a saloon fight on Dock Street. Finnan admitted the act. Shoemaker died on the sidewalk from a punctured heart. He leaves a widow and three children, the youngest two weeks old.
Ernest Dekoven Leffingwell, once lieutenant in the Mikkelson polar expedition, now leads his own voyage. He believes a continent lies beyond Peafort Sea and plans to circumnavigate it, offering the discovery to the world. Leffingwell prepares to depart Point Barrow with a white companion and a native crew, per Captily Porter of a Nome whaling fleet.

Gulver Washington Sept 10 Mining excitement grips Trout Lake settlers as a company forms for prospecting in the Mt Adams foot hills 75 miles northwest. E E B Wright J A Winegartner P F Ochs P J Peterson and F A Schnicke led a party August 1 from Trout Lake to the Niggerhead district with pack horses and provisions. The three first named returned last week claiming rich dirings and optimism for success.

Ogden Sept 10 Reno racing men alleged good things in California pool rooms and the local racing association announced it would not permit race results to be sent over the wires until the last race is run. Efforts are made to prevent information leakage before races are over.
City school preparations near completion as renovations finish and a single staff vacancy remains for assistant instructor in sciences. Tonight the school board may fill that post. teachers meet Saturday to plan the year and arrange book distribution to reduce opening day crowding.
Portland dispatch reports Mayor Simon favoring a special election to amend the municipal charter regarding laying water mains and the method of payment, in response to public demand for improved water facades.
