Pendleton Joins Spokane in Interstate Rate Case Push
Pendleton petitions for intervention with the Interstate Commerce Commission seeking equal freight rates with Spokane. Mayor Murphy and attorney Frederick Steiner announced Pendleton’s stance, arguing Pendleton’s location on Union Pacific and Northern Pacific lines justifies comparable rates. Other cities like Baker City La Grande and Walla Walla filed petitions. Pendleton says its case is strong and independent, with Spokane hearing set for September 29 in Spokane.

Famous detective case now on trial in circuit court
The trial of the famous detective bill case opened in circuit court before Judge Bean. Three weeks is the estimated duration, with a ruling likely to follow at a later date. The suit asks if the county may be permanently restrained from paying the detective’s salary for evidence gathered against violators of the local option law. Carter and Smythe represent C Cunningham and Frank Michael. District Attorney Phelps represents the county. The dispute centers on whether the county’s indebtedness was voluntary or involuntary given conditions at the time, and the case may go to the supreme court for final decision.
