In Ludlow and Trinidad districts Colorado amid a coal strike, General Chase’s troops disarm strikers and mine guards. More than 1000 state troops occupy the area. supplies and ammunition are distributed. Quiet returns after fierce fighting as guards and families seek safety.
K Cranston a former head book keeper at First National Bank was appointed by President Tallman of the Commercial Club to serve as secretary filling the vacancy left by Roy W Ritner. Cranston has been acting in the role pending ratification at the next regular meeting. He has also worked as bookkeeper for Puget Sound Warehouse Co for months.
Northern Bevert, Wash Oct 29 The Great Northern main continental line over the Cascades was blocked for the second time in two weeks by a rock slide loosened by a tunnel blast at Windy Point west of the Cascade tunnel The rock filled the track to 26 feet deep for over 150 feet forcing Overland trains from Seattle to be routed via Vancouver Walsh and the Spokane Portland and Seattle line to Spokane.
A former New York governor Luthern drew a large, enthusiastic audience at an East Side hall. He spoke to strong crowds in the district where he sought reentry as assembly member. Crowd adulation included cheers and attempts to shake his hand and touch him. The Sulzer campaign has mobilized his home district unit for the first time.
Plymouth Mass October 9 All evidence in the trial of Mrs Jennie May Eaton charged with poisoning Rear Admiral Joseph G Eaton had been completed when the afternoon session closed yesterday The widow has testified since October 14 the prosecution occupying seven days and the defense four In cross examination she contradicted witnesses including daughter Dorothy and her mother Mrs Harrison A medical expert Dr Arthur E Austin testified the poison was taken at or after the noon meal Wednesday March 6 in one dose Mrs Eaton was visiting Medford that day In rebuttal Dr Harry F Cleverly said Mrs Eaton and the admiral brought a child to his office in August 1909 diagnosed as cholera infantum The child died the next day Cleverly denied Mrs Eaton offered 1000 to cure the child A workman saw the admiral three days before his death and in good spirits He recalled hearing Mrs Eaton leave for Boston say There goes a lovely Woman The case will be in the hands of the jury before night with the court room crowded and spectators seeming sympathetic
President Wilson returned to Washington from Mobile and drove to the White House. He declined to discuss a new peace plan for Mexico, saying he was not discussing the situation at present. En route he received spontaneous welcomes and paused at Culpepper to greet locals, including Dr. Cary Grayson. University of Virginia students cheered him at Charlottesville, and in Evington he gave a bouquet of flowers to a woman who danced with joy. Governor Craig of North Carolina and staff met the president in Charlotte.
Captain Henry C. Merriam failed to win a divorce from Bessie Merriam. Superior Judge Graham awarded custody of their daughter Charlotte to Mrs Merriam with $75 monthly for her separate maintenance. Mrs Merriam was also cleared of alleged misconduct with Major Clarence Murphy during Merriam's absence.
City water receipts for the first nine months of 1913 exceed the entire 1912 year, with projected totals near 26871.43 after year-end. Increased revenue stems from stricter meter use and repairs, plus linking Eastern Oregon branch hospital mains, consuming about 2,000,000 gallons monthly and adding about 1500 annually. The meterization program, begun under Superintendent Hayes, has installed around 200 meters on a rental basis, a costly but expanding municipal trend. The plant’s operating costs may rise slightly due to higher summer usage and meter installs, but overall gains are expected to be modest per year.

In Calumet Michigan on October 23 a mediation attempt by former Sheriff James Byers and Circuit Judge P H O'Brien failed to end the miners strike in the Michigan copper country. Strikers offered to waive recognition of the Western Federation of Miners and keep union memberships if not discriminated against. Operators rejected the proposal as a practical recognition of the federation and remain committed to employing no federation members.

Engineer B O Miller and Fireman G J Davis, both of Spokane, were killed when the engine of Great Northern passenger train No 1 toppled from a 50 foot trestle after striking a work train at Waukee junction, sixty miles southwest of Spokane. No passengers were hurt. The train had been detoured over the S P and 8 tracks due to a Cascades rockslide. The cause of the work train’s trestle presence is not yet explained.
Veracruz, Mex. Oct 29 The wives of Daniel and Escastro Madero are held here under orders from the capital. They came by gunboat from Tampico after arrest in Monterey. They have written to Mr Lind seeking U S aid in their case. They were assured the American government wants justice and warned against violent measures.
New York October 24 A massive Tammany Hall parade drew several thousand from Central Park to the 14th Street headquarters on Fifth Avenue and Broadway. Enthusiasm rose with Edn E McCall the mayoral candidate appearing as Charles F Murphy led the event from the reviewing stand while Democratic candidates spoke at the hall.
Ida Gooding county voters approved bonds totaling 160000 to fund road construction. The project will start after the potato harvest and will provide work during the fall months when tram activity wanes.
New York Oct 29 Dr Ernest Muret alleged accomplice of Hans Schmidt in a counterfeiting scheme was sentenced to seven years in Atlanta federal prison by Judge Hunt.
La Grande Oregon October 24 preliminary budgeting suggests city levy near 20 mills, with about $30,000 left to retire debt or bond issues to reduce principal. City Accountant N J Mansager draft guides council as they set final levy. Revenue projected around $1,000,000 with $55,700 aimed for 1914 expenditures about $70,000, library and park levies to be funded.
Thomas Robbins a Oregon pioneer of 1852 and member of the Robbins family of Molalla died Sunday night at his brother Oliver Robbins home after a two week illness due to old age and paralysis. Born December 5 1836 in Decatur County Indiana he crossed the plains at sixteen then settled near Salem and moved to Molalla in 1862. He married Ellen Rees in 1868 and after various ventures lived in Kelso and Tacoma before spending the last years with Oliver Robbins in Molalla. He leaves his widow six children and brothers and sisters Harvey of Spokane Levi and Oliver of Molalla Mrs Gillan Pilot Rock Mrs N Leveridge Weston Mrs EF Benson Portland and Martin Robbins Oregon City.
The body of Harriett Verndon, 21, an arlet, was found in a Mission Apartments room in Luis Angeles on October 29. Marks on her throat indicate she was strangled. Laura Reynolds, friend of the dead girl, discovered the body and notified police. Verndon’s body was in a room previously occupied by a man and Reynolds is being held as a witness.
Austin reports the coldest October day in many years with temperatures plunging across the state and fears that the cotton crop is ruined. In Kansas, October 29 brought a record cold day with five inches of snow at Tojera.
President Wilson weighs sending an ultimatum to Victoriano Huerta to retire and end the Mexican dictator threat. Diaz remains aboard the Louisiana with Diaz out of the running for the presidency as Diaz seeks American protection. General Gray stays aboard the Louisiana while Diaz’s hotel host is questioned over arrangements and a $1600 bill. Washington expects a declared U S policy on Mexico as the president contemplates action to curb outside interference.
Oct 29 dispatch reports passengers arriving from the south saying the Ecuadoran revolution is spreading. Rebel leader General Concha is said to have routed government forces on several occasions, signaling growing unrest across the nation.
Nancy Anderson, 22, a milliner, left a note asking employer Mart Johnson to ensure she was truly dead before she was buried. She committed suicide in her room in San Francisco by gas inhalation, with no stated reason given by her employer.
W. W. Cottingham, longtime superintendent of Eaton schools in Pennsylvania, has spent a total of sixty years teaching in that single role.
