Beech Wood Becomes Key Material For US Wooden Shoes
Washington March 27 Special In the United States beech is the favored material for wooden shoes with production reaching substantial levels. A Department of Agriculture bulletin notes cost from 60 to 75 cents per pair and a two year lifespan. Shoes suit workers in cold or wet places such as tanneries breweries and liveratables and also steel mills and glass factories on hot floors. Farmers also use them. Only one beech species grows naturally in the United States, yet beech ranges from the Gulf of Mexico to eastern Canada and is cut for market across its range. The late annual output is about 560 million board feet.
