In northern Grant County Oregon a young girl, Bethe Weissenfluh, was fatally burned when her dress caught fire while she helped boil wheat. She ran to the house as flames enveloped her, and family members stripped off her clothing. She died within 24 hours at Long Creek.
German cruiser Gazelie and British cruiser Indefatigable arriving from La Guayra deny cables from Porto Spain that President Castro of Venezuela won a major victory at La Victoria. They say revolutionists appear to be gaining the upper hand.
Two masked robbers halted the North Coast limited near Bearmouth early today. One man seized the engineer, another tried to dynamite the mail car but failed. The baggage car exploded, engineer Neil was mortally wounded, and only the registered mail was taken. Conductor Quinn diverted the train to Drumond and pursuit launched by multiple counties. $5000 reward offered. Later reports say only one robber, claiming to be the same man who held up the Southern Pacific at South Portland a year earlier.
In a secret conference here Senator Mitchell agreed to endorse C. W. Fulton of Astoria for the United States senate. Harvey Scott of the Oregonian is very sore and vows to fight Fulton to a finish, greatly angering Portland readers.

Washington Oct 24 Colonel John B Mosby special agent of the interior department reported to the president the findings of his probe into legal occupation of public lands in Colorado and other Western states by stockraisers. He said millions of acres should be open to homestead settlers and that the interior department will eject stockraisers occupying lands unlawfully.
Paris reports France Britain and Germany have agreed to evacuate Shanghai with about 1200 troops. The pact extends the open-door policy in the Yangtse Kiang valley, aiming to foster commercial development. Evacuation target date is likely by January 1, per Foreign Office officials.
