Salem, Oct. 15. The Salem land board ordered sale of 17 sections of state land in Malheur county totaling about 1900 acres to the highest bidder. Bids open January 26, 2004, with a minimum of the fixed 1909 price per acre. The region lies along the Oregon Nevada dividing line and is rugged but well watered by creeks. Wheels may be ridden on all walks except Court and Main Streets from Oct 15 to Apr 15 after an annual tax of 3 is paid. Sherman Kunkel secured a permit at the recorder's office today. Many residents will take advantage of the sidewalk riding exception, while remaining vigilant for fast traffic racing toward town.

New York Oct 15 governors of the Stock Exchange suspended Zimmerman for one year and Leonard Shafer and 8. Rosenblatt for 90 days each for transactions connected with United Railways of San Francisco bonds. The action details were not stated. The men belong to Zimmerman & Froshay firm which issued a statement referring to court action and differences with parties who contracted to deliver the San Francisco bonds. Mr Platts Wedding Day.
The Boise Statesman reports the Twin Falls Canal will run 66 miles, irrigating 270,000 acres. Dams and ditch work began last March. 25 miles already under way. About 60,000 acres will be opened for settlement next year as the water reaches the first 26 miles. The canal is 80 feet wide at the bottom and 128 feet at the water line, ten feet deep, costing about 2,000,000 dollars.
In justice court this morning James Smith faced larceny charges from Matt Carney. Smith pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 days in the county jail, beginning this afternoon as his term started.
Titverger of Baker City secured the contract to supply brick for the Port Rowman building at a cost of about 22000. Colorado Borings will be used to brace the outside wall and Vorton brick for the facade. Work on the walls will start in two weeks with completion expected around March 16.
Washington reports a 9 o'clock morning census at every military station under U S control in Porto Rico Cuba the United States Alaska Hawaii and the Philippines. Troops in garrison were counted by causal commands and totals sent to Washington by wire and telegraph for the chief of staff annual report. The move is a first for the army and will incur high costs but is considered necessary.

The Chicago contingent arrives with eminent speakers. Attendance is expected to reach, with state officers predicting the greatest convention in the history of the state organisation.
Spokane October 16 contractor J F Hroad by attorney F M Dudley filed a civil action to stop city officials from inserting an eight hour work day in all contracts for city work and fixing pay at 2.26 dollars a day. Broad seeks to overturn the state eight hour law and the city ordinance.
Ogden Oct 1. A seven foot section of the Southern Pacific new track along the Great Salt Lake sank after a heavy train passed. The work was hailed as a model engineering feat by directors but appears to be a failure in progress toward bridging the lake.

Whistler withdrew his not guilty plea and entered a new plea to a robbery charge alongside McGuire, Sullivan, and Andy Brown who shifted from larceny to coin theft for stealing hoes from Ciivia Bagley’s store. Madden and Anderson were called for alleged forked cheeks crime with Madden pleading guilty to a related charge. The court sentenced several youths to two years, with some immediately facing penitentiary terms. the judge critiqued earlier acquittals and noted the young defendants’ ages. The session concluded after impaneling a jury and delivering verdicts, with the court set to resume the next day.
