On Columbus Day public officials take a vacation while schools and many businesses close or observe programs. Oregon marks the anniversary of Columbus's 1492 voyage with statewide recognition. cities like New York spend sizable amounts on related observances.
A fragmentary report notes efforts in thirty four states and Washington to declare Columbus Day a legal holiday. Lawmakers in various legislatures plan action at upcoming sessions and DC may join the move. supporters expect passage at the next session.
New York October 12. For the first time in history Columbus Day is officially commemorated in the city which is observing a holiday. The city has appropriated 100000 dollars as its share toward celebrating with parades etc.
Texas marks a statewide holiday in observance of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. Austin and other major cities join to honor the historic event with ceremonies and community events across October 12.
