Benton of New York shut out the White Sox 2-0 as New York scored in the fourth on Robertson’s triple and Holke’s double. Chicago made three errors while New York fumbled twice, improving the Giants’ series position and forcing a return to Chicago to finish.
A message reports Private Viet Dan O Donnell of Troop KP Pendleton Cavalry killed at Camp Greene Charlotte by a horse kick. He was a former Tall Man Drug Store worker and owner of a cat repair shop on West Court Street. Survived by mother Mrs Neleon and brother Tier at Wye. He was 22.

W A Latimers of Athena reports the purchase of the Jack McPhail ranch north west of town. The large property carries a high valuation though exact figures are not disclosed. Nearby deals include a $10,000 sale near Pilot Rock and land trades involving Direk Waugh, FP Jones, Colina and Wrrick with 10 acres near Nolin formerly Earl Newquiet Hillow.
Descriptions from the front report Australian forces capturing Cobbc wood southeast of Broodseclade after a hard fight. German casualties are estimated at about 75 percent higher than British, with shattered dead in shell holes and concrete pillboxes. The battlefield is said to be strewn with bodies and wreckage as both sides incur heavy losses. French forces meanwhile push forward north of Alwine, capturing Pope's geel farm east of Dralbank.
London reports powerful German counterattacks forced British retirement with light casualties near the Ypres salient. The action occurred about 2000 yards south of the Ypres railway and involved sudden exchanges of fire.
Washington dispatches reveal German plans to wreck the Canadian Pacific at several points and burn Canadian and U S munition factories. Mrs Harl Stewart died last night at the home of a daughter in Portland after visiting her children.
