The Tall Pine fair closes with a star billed Buster arranging a lively program. McElroy's Land will perform and alledged dance promises to enliven the afternoon as Tadians and Company and WHI present a baby show and feature act.
Conductor Mr. McElroy announces this evening's band program will be composed entirely of quest numbers. People wishing certain pieces played can leave the names with McElroy or Judge Fite Gerald, secretary of the fair, for consideration.
A lively parade lights up Pendleton with Indians and buckaroos forming at Main Street by the Hotel at 7 pm. Glen Bushee leads riders as men, women, and children join in the ride while a crowd gathers for the carnival mood and the pavilion show. The auto parade draws the week’s largest crowd, with a band, fireworks, and a display of prizes announced at the fair pavilion.
Paris dispatch reports El Regkhi the Moroccan throne pretender executed in Fes mid September was put to death by Sultan Murat Ha, dragged into a lions cage, mauled, then burned with lamp oil. The R. G. oil plan left nothing but charred bones as flames continued under goading. Olympia court to block McCredie on ballot due to holding office.
Governor James N Gillette vows that a women’s suffrage bill will not pass while he serves as California governor. Lilian Harris Coffin challenges him, accusing his remarks and calling them joshing, while Coffin’s protest teatrically scores Gillette amid the Sacramento confrontation.
A freight wreck on the Chicago Milwaukee and Puget Sound route west of Garrigan Mont killed conductor William Barnes and injured several others. A relief train was rushed to the scene.
Dispatches from Itoxatto Lombardy report a Milin express crash with a focal train, resulting in twenty fatalities and about a score of injuries. Rescue teams and authorities coordinate aid as investigators begin examining the wreckage and cause.
Arthur Wright of Lowell Center Massachusetts attempted to reach President Taft with a heavy caliber revolver near Sixth and Morrison streets beside the Portland Hotel. Police subdued him after a struggle. a 38 caliber revolver and cartridges were found. Wright claimed to seek a camera not the president. The incident was the first of its kind on the Taft trip.
President Taft arrives in Portland as local fight centers on Senator Jonathan Bourne with supporters accusing Bourne of steering Taft’s schedule. The day features Bourne allies claiming opposition sought to sideline him, Taft touring Multnomah Field, reviewing school children, and a Portland Hotel reception ahead of an Armory address.
In Seattle at the Country Club a feud arose between Josith Culling and Chester Thorne over Taft entertainment. Thorne pressed to take the president to Tacoma while Collie insisted on keeping the president for a round of golf. Taft arrived in Tacoma at night. the banquet featured a toastmaster and a perplexing explanation from Captain Butte, who refused to clarify.
Madrid via Hendaye Oct 2 reports Spain floods Morocco with troops as Melilla tightens. The war office admits a desperate situation and orders 15000 more troops. A detachment of the queens own regiment of lancers is sent to Melilla as reports of a broader uprising and internal disorder grow. General Weyler may be recalled to restore order.
Indianapolis reports W. W. Pruden of Dayton Ohio qualified as a balloon pilot after a 262 mile flight from White Plains Kentucky. He and a friend completed the trip and the balloon purchased four days ago was shipped to St Louis. Pruden will enter the BL Louis races next week.
H J Taylor and Dr W G Cole led a large demonstration at Court and Main on proper car turning. Drivers must turn squarely at right angles, keep to the right, and avoid diagonal cutoffs to prevent accidents and legal liability. The event urged city officials to mark crossings and enforce cornering rules in the business district.
An appeal urges Lugal area farmers to finance a Reynolds Automatic Side-Hill threshing machine factory in Pendleton. Pendleton Iron Works already markets the unit with strong local endorsements and plans to form a $75 000 to $100 000 corporation to manufacture and repair machines locally, saving freight and agent costs for Umatilla County farmers. The machine features automatic leveling for steep hillsides and is praised by several well known county residents.
The Morse horse theft case jurors failed to reach verdict on all four defendants and were discharged. One defendant, Harry Morse, is critically ill with pneumonia, delaying any possible retrial. The jury returned three times today before delivering a partial report, indicating at least three defendants face new trials while one may not be subjected to further proceedings.
Winnipeg reports say Mrs. Frank Grover and her daughters Catherine four and Dorothy two were burned to death on a farm near Lee Alberta while fleeing a prairie fire. Mrs. Grover shielded her children as flames enveloped them and her body was later found atop the children.
Seattle reports Ballinger declines to discuss the water power trust allegations raised by Pinchot. He says all facts will be fully explained in his forthcoming Taft report, likely next month, and notes he has ordered the withdrawal of more water power sites since taking office than ever before.
A deal to purchase the Vancouver baseball club is nearly concluded by manager Dickson, per Harry Wilson of Moscow Idaho. Negotiations have been pending, with final details to be closed soon, and plans to strengthen the team for next season underway. Hulen or Lew Nordyke may serve as playing manager.
In Portland on October 2 a gray mustached attorney, recalling days as a bootblack in Cincinnati, told President Taft he had shined his father’s shoes thousands of times. The man, John F. Carroll, attorney for the Burlington road, spoke admissions of past kindness.
New Orleans reports a dynamite explosion at a boarding house on the Panama Canal killing four men and injuring twenty five. Authorities believe the blast aimed at the lodgers but an investigation is not ordered yet. The shock rattled seven blocks and left the structure a total wreck.
